Auston Matthews auto in Centennial, is it fishy?

Echo that. I think you can see the evolution of his autograph over time. I'm not concerned at the moment.

I have some concerns about some autos on some of his earlier cards. However, the condensed version from that Cup auto above has consistently been the style on nearly all of his UD signed cards for the past couple seasons.

A lot of early Matthews autos have similar features but the execution is inconsistent, which makes it easy to have questions about authenticity. It's gotten more consistent and uniform since then, which is pretty common for many young players.

With that said, I wouldn't be surprised if a handful of players had someone else sign for them. That's not an indictment against UD or any specific players, but there are just too many cards and too many players for it not to happen.

I think I heard recently in the NBA there was controversy when it came out or at least speculated that Luca Doncic's mom was signing some of his cards.

My best,

Ken

Yep, lots of rumours around Doncic's autos. There were some suspicions about LaMelo Ball having Miles Bridges, his teammate, sign cards for him since their autos are so similar. Then there was the Dak Prescott fiasco too with the autopen I believe.

Definitely one of those "ignorance is bliss" situations for me. I'm sure some autographs aren't actually the athletes, just unrealistic to expect every person to be honest when no one is supervising and athletes have to sign thousands of cards/stickers/etc.

There was a huge conspiracy about Shaq autos too a couple of years back. Even Panini called him out on it. It definitely happens to at least a small extent and probably more than we’d like to know.

Remember when Devante Smith-Pelley got caught using a stamp on his cards? Hockey isn’t immune to it either.

It's not necessarily odd for a players signature to change over time. I personally have very pretty calligraphy and my signature changed several years ago.

It would be nice for a player of his caliber to changes his auto so it looks more appealing to collectors. I do not own any Matthews autos though. One day I will get one.

I’m going to necrobump this thread as I’ve had some concerns about more recent Matthews’ autos. Here’s an example:

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/2019-20-The...2349624.m46890.l6249&mkrid=706-127636-26712-0

This auto looks even more off compared to his rookie year autos than the Centennial ones mentioned earlier in this thread. Much more condensed and bold and letters that seem all together different.

Anyone else still skeptical about whether Matthews is signing his own cards? Personally I’m sufficiently spooked. If anyone has solid proof of Matthews signing like this in person or basically anywhere else please share.

Looks like autopen almost... no pressure points in the ink at all. One smooth flow all the way through.
