Auston Matthews signs 5 year extension with Leafs

So is he an unrestricted free agent at the end of the deal?

Yes he is.

I was hoping they'd get at least the sixth year. Still, not bad.

As far as what this means for Mitch - I think it paves the way for him in at $10 max (maybe another .5 if he goes for 6 years). So there is hope for the leafs cap issue yet!

If only they weren't stuck with Marleau for next year...

They're still going to be tight.... but they can probably figure this out now.

They have a hair under 72 million tied up in salaries for next season. Assume the cap will rise to 82 (That's a 2.5 million increase). They have 10 million to spend... and need to:

Resign or replace 4 forwards (Marner, Kapanen, Lindholm, Johnsson)
Resign or replace 3 defense (Gardiner, Hainsey, Ozhiganov)
Resign or replace 1 backup goalie (Sparks)

That assumes they hold the current roster make up of 12 F, 8 D, 2 G. Really there should be another body in there (23 total, not 22) but with the farm team just down the road, that's something they can play with as they need to.

If Marner wants (roughly) 10 million - That leaves them no money to replace or resign 7 players. Even if you got league minimum guys to fill those spots... they'll likely need to move Nylander, Marleau, or both. Zaitsev would be another one they could try and trade for a cheaper player, but they're already really thin on the right side of their d..... Kadri would be an easy deal to move if they were desperate for cap space too, I guess.

A big thing is that 93% of the contract is going to be given out as signing bonus which means that it is completely lockout proof. That may have contributed to the slightly lower AAV as well. Very creative on both ends.

I was wondering why it was structured like that. It’s not like the time value of money over 8 months amount to much.

Of course, I would happily take that 1-2% on $11 million a year!

The biggest thing is that if there is a work stoppage before the 2020-21 season Mathews will still receive his $15.2M signing bonus, because his signing bonus is due July 1 each year, and any potential work stoppage will not happen until much closer to the season.

Mathews' base salary is $700K in the first two seasons, and then $750K in the last three seasons. So that's all he would be out.

Compare that to someone like Mark Scheifele who signed his contract with zero signing bonus, he'll be out $5.5M.

Nice to know we have Auston tied up for five years after this one. All that's left now is to get Marner signed. May not happen until the off season. He'll be looking for very close,if not the same kind of money and rightfully so.
I'd still like to see a seasoned veteran backup in place before the playoffs, if Freddie goes down Sparks doesn't fill me with confidence he can deliver on a regular basis.
Cheers.
Dan.

There was something mentioned on Sportsnet that because Matthews is a US citizen, a signing bonus rather than salary is taxed at a much lower rate. So there’s that as well.

If it's the same term, I would suspect about 1M less per season. If it's a longer term, 6-8 years, probably high 9s to low 10s per.

I think if Marner signs longer term, he’ll get close to Matthews money... which is why it’s more likely to be a bridge deal in my mind. 2 or 3 years.

If I was Marner I wouldn’t be taking a bridge. I’m hoping my Isles sign him to an offer of 13 million per year for 7 years and see the Leafs flounder trying to match that.

I would love to see some teams, any team, really, start using the offer sheet, the league needs more excitement during the summer.

I don’t see how any team could justify making Marner the highest paid player in the league. I get the idea of messing with the Leafs, but you have to be prepared to eat that contract if they don’t match, and do you want to pay a guy the most money in the league who has finished top ten scoring (maybe) once and has one 20 goal and (maybe) one 30 goal season? That GM would be a laughing stock to his peers, not to mention the crazy jump in value league wide for a little bit of offence.

The trend has been to pay centres and goal scorers. Marner is neither on the Leafs. He’ll get paid, but I can’t see anyone giving him Matthews comparable money.

Agreed.
