What a waste of a roster spot.

I mean, he is apparently great in the locker room and well-loved in the community. But jeez...fighters are useless in the New NHL. Didn't FG get that memo?

Why do the Avs do this year after year? Jeff Odgers, Brent Severyn, Warren Rychel, Peter Worrell, Jim Cummins, Brad May, Scott Parker, Francois Leroux, Wade Belak...jeez, I know I am forgetting a whole bunch of losers...

Every year, they go out and get a new enforcer for some unknown reason.
Every year, they get an enforcer who can't skate or, I don't know, play hockey.
Every year, they get a guy whose job is to challenge the other team's enforcer and get the crap kicked out of him, because the guy they get can never fight a lick.
And if they do get a guy who was able to fight a lick at some point in his career, they get him when he is old, washed up, and completely useless.

So the Avs had an injury to their old, overpaid, washed up, useless enforcer who can't fight a lick. A golden opportunity to erase the mistake that was the Brad May signing and use that money and roster spot on a player who can actually add something to the team.

Instead of doing that, they replaced May with a younger version of May. Great move, FG.

Because at one point in time they had Dale Hunter, later Chris Simon - both competent goons who knew enough to keep their stick on the ice near the net. They're looking to replace that presence, and don't know how.

Right. Dale Hunter is my all-time favorite Av.

And that's why I understand and forgive Lacroix's decision to spend a 1st rounder on Scott Parker (he had put up 40g in junior the year they drafted him).

But the era in which Hunter was useful is over. Hell, the era in which Simon was useful is over. In the new NHL, you can't waste a roster spot on a goon.

The way the Avs draft, it seems to me that they get it. They have the perfect drafting strategy, when no other team does. But when you look at this goon fetish the Avs have, it is clear that they don't completely get it.
