Backstrom gets 1 game suspension

I'm confused. Wasn't this identical to, or very similar to, what Asham did? One gets 4 games, the other (note: a bigger name) gets only 1.

Wasupwitdat!

If anything Backstrom's was worse. Asham's hit was spur of the moment right after a big hit. Backstrom was skating away then then turned back to dish out the crosscheck. He had a lot of time to think about what he was doing.

So inconsistent. They should have an automatic 5 gamer for any intentional head shots. Add games to repeat offenders and/or for viciousness

A crosscheck like that to the face is 'intent to injure', but pummelling a guy with your bare fists while he doesn't fight back like Carkner did is not?

Sucks not having him in the lineup, but we did play half a season without him courtesy of Bourque's flying elbow.

So really he got nothing extra just the 1 game which is an automatic 1 game suspension when given a match penalty for attempt to injure.

I could be wrong but when I watch the replays of both Asham and Backstrom it appears that Asham's stick first contacts the chest whereas Backstrom's is directly into the face. I think 1 game for a "star" player is appropriate. CLearly Asham was penalized based on his past, not the actual incident in question.

Not sure I understand this. Carkner also got a suspension. What exactly is your point?

FWIW Carkner punched Boyle in the chest and arms when he was down. It wasn't an intent to injure. It was intent to make a point. Big difference

What an off game for Backstrom: 3 penalties then that... It was a selfish and incorrect move, but it was also definitely in response to the trip that Peverley preformed on AO like 3 seconds earlier..Backstrom was just stepping up for his teamate, too bad he lost his head and approaced it all wrong.

I,ll take a guy like Carkner on my team any day of the week.
Basically youre saying that it was okay for Boyle to pummel Karlssonn with a bunch of rabbit punches to his face , but when someone his own size comes and pays a visit, Boyle turtles.
Fonzies antics were telling his players to hurt Karlssonn, ottawa made adjustments for game 2 and fixed the problem, The only difference is that thge referees werre one game to late on making calls.

I'm fine with 1 game here. While a hit to the head, it wasn't particularly malicious and Peverley was ok. For having to be a superstar and miss a playoff game, Backstrom should get the message with only 1 game, as now he will be a "repeat offender" if he does anything else. I'm more upset about Dale "the Head" Hunter saying that the Bruins are targeting Backstrom's head. That's bush league politicing there. After losing two players due to severe concussions, the last thing the Bruins are doing is targeting a concussed players head intentionally. Scrums are scrums, facewashes and such are norm, to say that the Bruins are targeting the guys head, C'mon! BTW, The guy had 3 cross checking penalties in one game for Chrissake, he isn't a saint out there!

I didn't see the backstrom hit..is it on youtube yet?
Anyway I agree I think it any 2 handed stick contact with the stick above the shoulders should be 5 games...hitting a guy while his face is down should get a player a few more...I don't know which was worse..bias probably clouds judgement of some of the opinions(doubtful for guys here that don't give a rats...about either the Caps or Pens). I think the bottom line is the result could have been the same with the shots to the head so a better guideline to help the powers to be make better decisions....They should stop the bias decisions too. Only reason a star should get less than a "Scrub" semi-star or enforcer is because of history

Backstrom didn't jump on top of Peverly and pummel him like Asham did to Schenn.
Asham is also a repeat offender, i believe.

if Asham got 4, Backstrom should have got 2, but he's a star player and star players always get less.

my theory on Shanahan's mathematical equation on suspension.

to the head? - +1 game
major injury? - +3 games
looks vicious - +1 games
repeat offender - +2
star player? - divide by 2

Weber = 1 to the head, - 1/2 star player = 1/2 = fine
Asham = looks vicious (1), repeat offender (2), to the head (1) = 4

let's put the theory to test on Torres...

major injury = 3
to the head = 1
repeat offender = 2
(no on star player or looking vicious)
total = 6 games
