We all know that buying packs/boxes/cases of hockey cards for the most part ends up losing you money. This thread is not about that. I want to know what people think is the best value in the hobby.

Is it hockey cards, baseball cards, non-sport?....etc

My friend recently introduced me to the world of comics and it's crazy how they pretty much rarely go below their sticker price and some comics which are not more than a few years old which were purchased at 3$ are now sold on the secondary market at 20X +.

Buy autographs of deceased players/people. They aren't signing any more! :whatthehell: Not too many hockey players signed more autographs than Maurice Richard in his later years, although Gordie Howe, and Johnny Bower are currently giving him a run. Try finding Rocket autos now at a decent price? Not alot available now, because most are tucked away into private collections. IMO, you really can't gowrong buying autographs of HOF players in any sport, really?

Coins, Paintings, antiques but then you have to have a bunch of money and now we talk BIG money.

As for cards, comics etc... well I'm counting on loosing money.

Trading cards are like commodities.. buy low , sell mid-high and run.. Just kidding..

you should collect what you like first and second, do your homework before committing to anything you want to purchase.

Regarding your last comment, I'm not too sure what you mean? The comic and card market is currently VERY strong. Like everything else, the more common stuff is very watered down. And generally doesn't sell for much. The Sportscard market is a very good example of this. There's just too much of it around. Like any other market, the "better" stuff always sells for more money. I think some people will be shocked at some of the prices paid for other items in the different collectibles market.

I tend to disagree on saying that the market is very strong. I think from a retailer to a costumer the market is great. Boxes and packs always sell. But I can't say that the costumers will get their money back.

When it comes to cards no autographs are rare. I mean Gretzky, Crosby, Kane, Ovechkin, Roy, Lemieux, Yzerman, Howe, Orr signs thousands of cards each day (it feels like that). This isn't just hockey.. All players superstars, rcs, common guys signs to much and the "game used" stuff well here I just rest my case. Sooner or later almost all of the new stuff will be common before release.

When it comes to rare items they are always strong. A Crosby Cup RC always costs a lot of money, rare first editions of spider man and superman etc always costs a great amount of money.

So what I mean is that I consider a hobby a hobby it's something I do for fun. I work to get money. If I want to invest I'll buy stocks or rare old antiques.

I don't completely understand the rebuttal in this situation? You've pretty much echoed the initial statement that I've posted? I just stated that the market for other collectibles (coins/comics/) is stronger than one might think. As we deal with other item(s) besides cards our store. And you're right, the premium items generally command more money. But I do agree with your last statement, the hobby should be fun. Collect what you like and enjoy.

You can't say that just because some cards, comics, coins, stamps etc has some great auction endings the whole hobby is strong? I mean the whole card hobby is watered with photoshot used jerseys, several cases of auto pens/stamps. Ten years ago you could not get a Bobby Orr auto for less then 400$ and now on card autos with him sometimes sells around 50$. To me that's a sign that the hobby isn't strong.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I feel I am quite lucky when it comes to buying packs and boxes, rarely will I buy any new products, I have a local storethat when he has something that sits on his shelves too long he sells it to me at a drastic discount.
As for whats best, stick to what you enjoy the most thats what the hobby is about anyway.

Supply versus demand Orr autos were so expensive cause everyone wanted one and not that many on the market. Now its flooded and everything is cheap. Except newer rookies. If I pull new RC's of touted players I always sell them, you most always get more $$$ when a product first comes out.
