BETWEEN THE PIPES - CANCELED?

No.

It is well known that the current economic conditions are very difficult for collectors and manufacturers alike.

Unfortunately, for In The Game, this resulted in very disappointing sales for the 2008-09 Between The Pipes.

"Last week I had to make a decision based on the advanced sales of Between The Pipes, whether or not to cancel the release of this product, or not" reported ITG President Dr. Brian H. Price. "I consulted with several distributors, dealers and collectors and determined that this would not be fair to those who wait to collect this product every year. A certain number of autograph cards, game-used memorabilia cards and Masked Men inserts had already been produced. So I decided that rather than cancel or delay the product, I would reduce the number of cases produced and therefore increase the number of inserts in the boxes that had already been ordered."

This means that collectors will find more insert cards (autograph cards, game-used memorabilia cards and Masked Men inserts) than the ratios stated on the boxes.

"Rather than punish our loyal collectors, I decided to reward them." Price said.

Between The Pipes releases March 26th.

In The Game Loses A Valuable Family Member

Sadly on March 23rd at the Newmarket Hospital surrounded by his family, Kenneth Milton Whitmell Sr. passed away.

Born in 1928 in Porquis, Ontario, Ken Sr. married Mignonne Tremblay also from Porquis in 1952. The couple spent their entire lives in this tiny Northern Ontario town and raised a family of four daughters (Shirley, Peggy, Bonny and Sherry) and one son (Kenneth Jr.)

Ken Sr. was self-employed his entire life. Some of his business ventures included owning a service station, a bus line and a trucking company.

He leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Whitmell was an integral part of the In The Game Production Team working on all of our high-end products including Ultimate Memorabilia and Superlative Hockey.

He passed on a solid work ethic to Ken Jr. our Vice President of Production and Chris Berlinghoff our Production Manager.

He will be missed by all.

BTP is one of my favourite products, given I collect a goalie. The release of the product with less cases means even more value/box than originally expected. This will be a great product to open, but ITG is obviously taking a financial hit by not doing full production. Times are changing, but I'm glad ITG came through with BTP for us goalie guys.

While it is unfortunate to hear that the economy is starting to take its toll on the hobby, I'm now even more excited to buy this product. I doubt it'll be quite the level of every box is a Superbox, but I'm really looking forward to the release.

With this news I may actually give this product a try, not a big goalie collector but I do like Carey Price

I was honestly going to pass this up this year becasue of my current finances and only buy singles. I still may wait and see if the prices come down (like the last 2 years), but this is definitely making it harder to stay away. I'm a goalie collector, so I was so happy when this set came back in 06-07. I have bought 2 cases each year. 06-07 was certainly better than 07-08, but 08-09 already looked strong. Either way I'm glad ITG and Dr. Price decided to continue with the release.

I'm a little surprised advance sales were weak considering the buzz on these boards was mostly positive. It sounds like there will be a lot of nice stuff packed into each box/case.

if ebay sales are a good measure, then all (except possibly UD Black, which appears to have been very strong) of this years products are way under 07-08 regardless of manufacturer..

Very good of ITG to adapt to the current climate and do everything they can to make this release as best as it can be. I buy BTP every year and this year is no exception. It's great to know that it will be great value for our money, especially considering that that is what's on everyone's mind due to the current state of the economy.

It's out just in time for the Toronto Card Show this weekend so I'll be breaking it at time of release. Excited!

I'm really looking forward to this years BTP. I've been waiting all year for a set to collect and so far hadn't found anything more than a passing interest in H&P. The masked men inserts have me already planning on doing the subset and for the first time in almost 4 years of collecting I pre-ordered some boxes. I'm glad that ITG stuck with BTP for this year and the fact that the hits will come more frequently is just icing on the cake.

I am looking forward getting my hands on BTP. I have contacted my local card shop and purchased all four boxes he got in advance. I am hoping he will get more. I am a Chet Pickard fan and am glad that he has quite a few cards in this set.

Maybe this is a blessing in disguise. If the lackluster economy means that companies can not afford to produce as many sets as they do is that really a bad thing? We as collectors are swamped with products and that (as well as the state of the economy) has led to the huge drop in value in the very cards we collect.

Nothing wrong with a company dropping a few sets. Probably the best thing right now for this hobby rather than forcing a set into a market that does not want it.

And before you guys jump on me ITG clearly admitted that presales were not there so yes some of you guys may collect it and what not but the market is not there. They are basically forcing this set into existence.

Expect box prices to exceed MSRP right out of the gate??

Hopefully the store owners see the benefit of NOT increasing prices above the SRP to ensure the product is a hit with collectors at the store level. If they bump the prices higher, they're just trying to gouge the buyers, and it'll burn them in return.

I can't WAIT to get my delivery!! WOOHOO!

That's a bit much. I agree that there are too many sets produced each year (I'm the one that raises my hand and cries it out the most), but BTP is a popular set and stands out from the plethora of sets produced each year. It's the numerous other sets that at the end of the day really aren't anything different that contribute to market saturation. ITG certainly could never be accused of market saturation with their product lineup. They produce a lot of niche sets such as BTP. They aren't forced into existence, but rather meet a collecting need that exists.

As does tend to be the case during market downturns, the need to cut back is realized once the market is down, not during the planning phase. This will be the case with all products and even the most popular ones will likely see cuts to production.

When half of my case didn't sell, I was thinking about cracking it anyways. Now that they loaded up the product, I will open up the entire thing now.
