BGS Grading is a joke

So I had this Kadri Ice RC /99 for a while & listed it on ebay a few months ago. Got decent $ out of it but then heard from the buyer that it was damaged. He returned it & I refunded.



Notice the white line cutting up into his pants by his right hip compared to this one from ebay

There is a scratch on the back side of the card and a bit of the print has peeled away. After getting the card back from the ebay buyer I resold it as is but now a bit later I see this listed on ebay...

Really Beckett? BGS 10?

All grades are 10 except surface 9.5 but I'm pretty sure the damage, although hard to notice at a glance, should have been seen by the pros at Beckett & should be more than a .5 dip no?

Unfortunately, it's all about the name is on the submission form... The lesson is clearly to blindly submit more to Beckett!

For me though....I dont need anyone to tell me what the condition of a card/comic book is...I have eyes

The funniest thing is that someone who buys the 10 probably won't even look at the card to see if there's anything wrong with it... Why would they? They probably have faith that the grading company would be able to see any blatant scratches in the card or any other damage for that matter...

I hear ya. I get cards because I like them. Not how someone else thinks it looks. I have a 1966 Gordie Howe Topps that is in a little rough shape. I knew that when I bought it. I liked the card, and thought it was a cool card to own.


I have heard to many bad stories about grading cards that turned me off from it long ago. (people submitting hundreds a month guaranteeing them a 10 on each card, the company (beckett?) that fanned out all the gretzky rookies on a table and took pictures to post about it online etc.....)

All the grading companies have these types of stories. I love the guys who only buy graded cards; especially vintage so they know it's real.... OMG, look at the card - you can spot fakes 1,000,000 miles away.

not to mention all those beautiful Wayne Gretzky OPC RC's that were graded prior to the "reprint" discovery... i love those ones.

That being said, we carry a very large inventory of vintage and have a ton of collectors who spend a saturday afternoon going through the monster boxes finishing their sets and none of them ever want or look at the graded vintage we have in the show cases....

The image you paint would be heaven! Unfortunately, not all of us have the luxury of (1) a close or local shop with (2) an inventory of vintage hockey, so grading does have its place in the hobby. Paying $50+ or $100+ using only a scanned image or camera pic of a vintage card can lead to major disappointments and headaches. [It's sometimes tough to even find collectors on trading sites willing to take the time to scan a vintage 'common' for you.] I've purchased numerous cards described as 'EX-MT' (with scans) through the years that would be lucky to achieve a 'POOR' grade in person. It's through experience that I'm much more willing to pull the trigger on a graded vintage card than a raw one online. I don't particularly value the graded over a raw, I just don't have access to the raw...

I absolutely believe this to be true too.

I sent in some stuff and one of the cards came back to me as altered or retouched. I couldn't find evidence of this except on a TINY bit of an edge, while looking at it through a magnifine glass.

Meanwhile cards with a crack in them, or those 05-06 SPx rookie jersey autos that had part of the jersey window torn off, or even some BGS 9.5 and 10 cards I've had that looked like they had bad corners on them can get by a watchful eye without a hitch.

If you are buying BGS graded cards stick to the ones with the subs on the back. They were graded a lot better back then.
