Birthday Trip & Live Break

No better way to celebrate the big 4-OH then a killer halibut and ling cod fishing trip, and a live wax rip fest. Headed down to Westport for a 2 day fishing trip, the halibut were all pretty small this year, biggest one I saw was about 40 pounds, but most average around 20. :| On the bright side, those 20-30 pounders are the best tasting size so it's all good. On the flip side, we went pipe jigging for ling cod and the lunkers were out in full force and hungry as hell! Landed a few monster size lingers and if you have never caught one before, it is a massive workout trying to real these things up in 700 feet of water!!

So that was the fishing trip, way too much fun and can't wait for next year! The live rip fest will be Wednesday in chat, probably around noon PST. We will be shredding:

2 boxes Decades Chicago National Edition
1 case Decades Toronto National Edition
1 book Superlative Franchises Toronto
3 boxes Dominion

Can't wait for the mailman to arrive, pop in and join us for the fun! :beer:
 
Happy belated birthday. Nice catch and good luck with the breaks. Hopefully you pull some p.c. cards but if not, pull me a Dominion Markstrom 1/1 so you can sell it to me.:)
 
Awesome man, I caught a Ling before that looked like that but it was freshwater? Someone else called it a burbott?

It was around 10-12 lbs and tasted like cod.

Good stuff.

Man those Ling Cod are U-G-L-Y...I've caught a few in the past...I'll stick to Walleye and Trout lol

love the photos, wish we were aloud to catch halibut around here still - have to settle for their delicious little cousins the flounder
 
Was the meat on that ling good? I used to work on the dock and guide at a salmon fishing lodge in the Queen Charlottes and we found that a lot of the time the big lings had wormy meat. Either way nice catch and Happy Birthday.

Wow, I didn't realize you were that old Tony. LOL Happly belated.

I would have loved to gone on that fishing trip. I manage to get out to Masset BC every couple of years and go out with one of the locals just off the tip of Queen Charlottes Island. I'm used to catching 3-5 lb walleye or bass out of the Ottawa River so its extra sweet to get the chance to fish for the big game salmon, ling cod and halibut once in a while. I'd also like to try a trip to Northern Ontario for the elusive muskee and northern pike too.

Looks like you caught enough for a few fish frys anyways. Bonne apetite!

Hi Connie, congrats on winning that Cujo jersey, couldn't have gone to a better person/collector!

I honestly have never seen worms on lings or halibut, I'm guessing if you have that issue out where you are it has to do more with the environment then the species. All the lings we get here and in Alaska are pure white perfect meat.

Thanks for the "belated" birthday wishes everyone, but my birthday is actually tomorrow! I just go on my annual birthday trip the first Tuesday of halibut season so it's usually a couple days before my b-day. I appreciate all the wishes though!!! :beer:

Back to fishing haha :) the lings I have seen with wormy meat have been 50+ pounders. I have never seen wormy hali meat, biggest one I have seen was over 300 lbs. It's interesting you say that all your lings have pure white meat. In the Queen Charlottes there white lings but there are also green lings and their meat is green. I guess it must be a factor of environment and diet.

HA!!! Funny you mentioned that, I caught a green/aqua blue Lingy Ding yesterday! Here is a picture, they are pretty rare out here and you are correct, they adapt their color to the habitat and what they eat. They are very tasty, but to be perfectly honest, I find the green/blue ones give you gas!!
