Blank backs from the 70's & 80's

So what's the story behind REAL blank backs from the 70s and 80s? Are they real cards, errors, box bottoms that were cut? Do they have any particular value... more or less than the regular card?

Just wondering because I am in talks about getting a graded 1986 Lemieux (one of my favorite card years) and I have no idea what they really are.

If memory serves, Topps was selling off blank back proofs on ebay a while ago as well as cards with just one or a combination/not all colours printed. Could be one of those? Box bottoms always had different photos than the regular base cards as far as I know, and I think also they usually had stats & letters instead of numbers.

I have a bunch of 82-83 OPC blank backs but I only assume they were an error in printing.As for the 1985-86 blank back Roy rookie that there seems to be some around.Most of those are likely just the Roy that was pictured on the box top and than cut out card size.

Yes they do have some value.I remember that I had bought a bunch of empty boxes and cut those Roy out and people seemed alright with paying $20-$30 for them.Not a lot of money but better than tossing it in the recycle.The cards from the box bottoms are also a very nice collectable.

Funny topic as I just started picking up some old OPC balnk backs.

Burner: PSA do grade them, check on ebay there are a few on there.
