"The NHL has filed a counter-proposal to the NHL Players' Association offer, upping the salary cap to $42.5 million. The NHL has told NHLPA executive director Bob Goodenow that it's a final offer with no flexibility or room to negotiate and must have a response by 11 a.m. tomorrow."

I think it would have to be. If you didn't do the 24% rollback, then several teams would automatically be over the cap from Day 1.

The temperature on Goodenow just turned up to 11. While both sides are finally making concessions, will the 9.5 million dollar gap be too much? If he rejects, he must throw another number out there. Otherwise, it will look awfully bad on him.

oh so close...I assume the other points of the cba have been addressed and this is the final sticking point to be negotiated (I hope)...actually a mid 40 million cap is not that bad especially when you think back 6 months ago when many speculated 28-32 million was needed...

Anything over $40 mil will not save the game of hockey...I think $34mil is the max that game can survive with right now. Maybe in the future a $40 mil works, but right now, ~$46 doesn't make sense.

No, they should find a solution that will work for the next 3-5 years, and install a system that will ensure the game will be around.

Stupid NHLPA. Now there is a difference of 6.5 million. Honestly, I think the PA is just trying to play with Bettman's non-necogiable talk. Try to add on a couple more million on their "final" proposal. If the season gets cancelled after this, they are going to lose even more fans than just cancelling it without last minute talks. It's just ego vs. ego now.
