Briere ready to return.....again

It appears that Flyers center Danny Briere will once again return to the lineup on Thursday, when the Flyers host the Washington Capitals in the fourth game of a season-long five game homestand. Briere practiced with the team during practice this morning at the Virtua Center Flyers Skate Zone.

"I think at this point I'm ready to go. Hopefully I'll get the chance to play Thursday," said Briere. "Since this injury started back in October, this is probably the best that I've been feeling."

"He looks good. I think we're pretty optimistic we'll get him in tomorrow," added John Stevens. "I think he's ready. I know he wants to play so there's a good chance he'll play tomorrow.

Riley Cote, who left Tuesday's 5-2 win over Buffalo with an upper body injury, also said he is fine to play. Martin Biron will get the start in net against the Capitals.

The Capitals, who arrived in Philadelphia last night after a shootout win in Nashville, were scheduled to practice today at the Spectrum but instead opted for a day off.

It was not stupid money last season. He is worth it when he is healthy. The best do get season long injuries. Ask Brodeur. Dont even bother making another Briere returning thread because there is mixed opinion between the coaches, GM Holmgrin, and coach Stevens. He was ready to go yesterday but Stevens held off.

Groin injuries are one of the most difficult injuries to recover from. Mike Richards had one in his second season and he was not the same when he came back. When he changed his off season workout and his excercise routine, he was back in top form. Briere will be doing the same thing after this season is over.

Its not like the Flyers are losing sleep without Briere, Giroux has been playing like a seasoned NHLer right now.

My point is that Briere is seriously overpaid whether he plays 82 games or 8. He's not an elite scorer no matter who tells you he is. He makes what, $6.5 this year, then 8, 7, 7, 7? A healthy Briere is really worth that?

For a 6.5 million cap hit and what he did in the playoffs last year, he is worth it.
 
Pretty hard to berate the Briere signing when you have paid Vanek $10m and $8 mil over the last two years for 113 points in 140 games isn't it?
 
Didn't Briere have the most ES points 2 years ago, and isn't he #1 or #2 in overall play-off points the last 3 years? When dude's healthy, he is pretty amazing.

Briere is worth the money, and you're right - his conditioning will change in the offseason. He's been focused on strength training for a while.

Based on the last three playoff runs, I really think the Flyers will be glad to have him back. Even if they don't bring him back until the first round of the playoffs (for financial reasons, or whatever), they're going to be a better team with him.

Depends on if you're signing a mid-season extension, a year-before-expiry extension, and whether or not you're a UFA or RFA. There's also the consideration of who else is available and when.

Last year, Alexander Ovechkin made just under $1M. It worked out to just over $15,000 a goal. This year, his production is similar, but he's making $9M, and no one questions his value. Zach Parise is going to make $2M this season, and might net 50 goals. I take that as a relative bargain.

...and then there's Scott Gomez.....

He was a stud against Washington.

Unfortunately he died after that series.

Montreal.... 1 or 2 points.

Pittsburgh.... was he playing? I don't recall seeing his name to often on the score sheet, if at all.
 
Hot off the Press.................. NHL suspends game..............

Sources who attended the game reported that early in the contest a loose puck went into the corner. Neither participant were willing to go into the corner to retrieve the puck.........."
 
Yep, that's Briere to a T. He never goes into a corner or near the front of the net, he just fires shots from his own blue line. Never mind Washington was crying about him being in Huet's face last year and the fact that, as a winger this season he was constantly feeding Richards and Gagne pucks from the corner.
