The hobby needs to get back to inserting hard to get insert sets. Seeing what the MCDS Golds have been selling for, it's obvious collectors like these.
There is an abundance of jersey cards of every player available in every set and multiply that year after year.
Its just a matter of time before this "market" crashes. The supply is way too high.
Some would argue that they are scarce and numbered, but that doesn't help when these are produced year after year.
I just hope we don't get a correction the way we did in the 90's.
Something has to be done!
I somewhat agree with you, though you have to remember McDonalds is a bit of an outlier and is popular amongst the most traditional of collectors, the same way Upper Deck Young Guns are where they have print runs exceeding most of the rookie cards out there, but tend to gather more interest and long term value that some of the short printed serial numbered ones (like Trilogy, SPGU, etc)
Back on topic with hard to find insert sets...Upper Deck started doing that last year bringing back Run for the Cup, and including Clear Cut Winners in UD1 and UD2, which were largely successful. Unfortunately, they act like the guy I work with who thinks if you even snicker at one of his jokes, he has to tell 100 related ones that aren't funny, or border on downright offensive. Using this rationale, only a few sets into the year, we've now been inundated with the following case hits:
-Victory Black
-OPC Blank Backs
-OPC Signatures
-Fleer Ultra EX Green/Red
-Fleer Ultra Jambalaya
-Fleer Ultra Fresh Ink
-UD Clear Cut Winners
-UD Clear Cut Winner Duals
-UD High Gloss
-UD Signature Sensations
and the case hit beatings will only continue as the year progresses. Interest has dropped, or thinned/spread out as a result, and these aren't as popular as they were last season. You could probably build an entire set of Clear Cut Winners this year for less than half of what you could last year. If anything, UD needs less of these case hit chase sets, and if they really want to do the trick, have more sets like Jambalaya, where the inserts fall 1 in 3 or 4 cases and it becomes the next big thing everybody wants to chase.
Your idea is absolutely coming from the right place. I think that UD and ITG just need to deliver something different and new to collectors. There's still room for innovation in this market...someone just has to sit there and sketch ideas out.
