I really enjoyed building the insert sets from this release... as well as hunting down the mini Masks that were offered one per box. Just curious, how many people would be interested in the resurrection of this set... especially the mini Masks (not the same players like Roy, Brodeur, Belfour, Nabokov etc... but some new players like Fleury, Kiprusoff, Turco, Lundqvist, Price etc.)

Update from Upper Deck's Facebook Discussion Thread:

Kendall,

It's likely not going to happen unfortunately. The leagues traditionally do not want us to focus on just one type of player, they like to see all the players represented.

Additionally and much more importantly, the majority of the goalies commission artists to paint their personalized masks for them. Over the past few years, the artists have started retaining rights to their work (they used to be included in our license). In some cases now we actually have to change photos so we are not focussing as much on the goalie masks.

We’d have to negotiate with the artists and pay them to use the mask likenesses. Based on some initial discussions on what they would charge, that’s not likely going to happen anytime in the foreseeable future.

Oh well... it was worth a shot!

Cheers!
Kendall

oh yes, bring it back, one of my Top 3 sets of all time!! I wanted to build the master set of 01-02, but fell short.

I'm the only one that voted no so far, only because it wouldn't matter much to me. i don't collect a goalie really

I don't collect a goalie either but have always loved the goalie themed sets. BTP is one of my favorite products so a hearty yes from me also.

I voted NO, because Mask Collection should be devoted to goalies, and on the last iteration, there were all the usual base and rookie cards of non-goalies.

If you're gonna do Mask Collection, make it about goalies, otherwise, it's just another in the litany of products everyone has to endure each year.

My favorite Nieminen cards ever produced (Jersey/Patch and Patch/Patch) came from the 01/02 set...for that reason alone I say bring it back.

I voted yes, but with a firm stance that the set never quite lived up to what it should have been. This put it well:

There needs to be more to separate it from every other "two or three SP rookies, two or three jersey cards, and a couple inserts in every box" product that Upper Deck releases -- which is what, 60% of their entire product line?

Make it something unique, something focused almost-completely on goaltenders. Put third-and-fourth string goalies into the set, rather than giving us the 17th rookie card on the year of some 28-year-old defenseman who went back to Europe in October.

I like the concept in general -- regardless of what company is producing it -- but UD would have to really outdo themselves to challenge BTP.

I voted Yes. This was the set that actually got me collecting in the first place. I managed to complete most of the jersey, stick and glove sub-sets of the 01-02 release. I also liked the fact that you got a mini mask in each box.

I voted yes as well. However, I just can't see UD producing a set where they do not include rookies. Plus, competing with BTP won't be easy...

I agree completely with Andy. This is what Mask should be if UD chooses to bring it back.

Easy, no, but the added advantage of the licence would help considerably, as well as giving increased access to the goalies for the usage of their helmets, the logos, etc.
There are usually a handful of rookie goalies every year as well, so while they wouldn't be the marquee attraction--barring the arrival on the scene of another Price or Mason--they could still have a little corner of the set.

ditto above. We have enough product.

Take away Black Diamond, SPx and Collector's Choice and we might jump on board!

Upper Deck is lacking many things, especially a product devoted just to goalies, mask collection was awesome, the two 2002-2003 boxes I opened were fair priced at $60 I think and they were a lot of fun.

I pulled a Gerry Cheevers Autographed Halloween style Old school Mini Helmet. I Didn't even know it was autographed until I tilted the mask and saw silver ink and a COA on the bottom of the box, that was awesome, 2nd box had a Potvin LA Kings mini helmet which I have out at shows for $10 but guys are low balling me for $5 so I still have it (anyone interest HAHA?), I also got a Henrik Zetterberg rookie /1299 and Brian Boucher Patch /33 in the boxes too.

So Yeah, how do I get a Henrik Zetterberg Rookie and Player Game Used Jerseys in a set called Mask which should be goalies only? I don't think Upper Deck said mask was goalies only. And I don't think Upper Deck has a AHL, OHL, WHL, QMJHL and IIHF License like ITG. When ITG produces between the pipes you get goalies you have never heard of in other leagues besides the NHL along with current stars, and legends. I don't think upper deck can facilitate a goalie only set with just NHL starting goalies and backups, there are simply not enough goalies to make a descent print run in terms of case cards, inserts, and memorabilia across the board.
