Bruins acquire Hathaway, Orlov from Capitals for Smith, picks

The Boston Bruins acquired forward Garnet Hathaway and defenseman Dmitry Orlov from the Washington Capitals in exchange for forward Craig Smith, a 2023 first-round pick, a 2025 second-round pick, and a 2024 third-round pick, the teams announced Thursday.

The Capitals will retain 50% of Orlov's salary as part of the trade. The Minnesota Wild are also retaining an additional 25% and sent Boston the rights to forward Andrei Svetlakov in exchange for the Bruins' 2023 fifth-round pick.

Boston has been a dominant force all season long, sitting atop the league with a 43-8-5 record. The Bruins are on pace for 133 points and 63 wins, which would set two NHL records.

By adding Orlov and Hathaway, Boston has done well to shore up its blue line and bottom-six forward group.

The Cup is now clearly Boston's to lose.

They say anything can happen in the playoffs - and it would give me penultimate joy to watch the B's f*ck this up - bonus points if one of their Eastern Conference foes can do us all a favour of eliminating them before the Stanley Cup Final. ;-)

I'm not sure how I feel about this deal, to be honest. At first, I get it, the negotations with Orlov were going nowhere, so you either deal him or risk losing him for nothing.

Similar situation with Hathaway, but I hadn't heard much leading up to this if there were negotations going on with him, or how they were going, or anything. He was one of the few games who showed up each and every game and gave it his all.

The Caps are one of, if not the, oldest team in the league. So I get the draft picks. But Craig Smith? That makes zero sense to me.

I really liked Hathaway, and his game. Orlov....was a game-by-game decision, depending on which one showed up on any given night. I'll wish them (not Boston) well.

Yeah, it’s long since moved away from players and picks only being the only considerations in a trade. With the cap being static the last few years especially, it’s been critical to balance the money in, money out situation.

This makes Boston better, but interesting to mess with what has been a super successful regular season team so far and taking the guys that got you there out of the mix. I sometimes think hockey teams feel they have to do something and just do deals to do deals.

Losing Hathaway makes me sad. He worked hard every shift, physical player with good vibes for the team too, I think! That six games loosing streak and these decision fits perfectly into that season…
