Buffalo picks at number 1 (the first time they've had any luck with this sort of thing). Carolina moves up a bunch of spots, Montreal moves up 1 spot. Would have loved to see Dahlin in Montreal but the next few available forwards are all pretty solid consolation prizes.

They finally won it, that’s great for the Buffalo fans. I am glad he is on the east coast so I will get to see him play.

NHL - "Haha, no, they're not getting McDavid, we will give them the #1 in a weak draft class."

"The Buffalo Sabres have won the 2018 Draft Lottery!"

All kidding aside, I hope this pick helps Buffalo. I don't see how it can't at this point?

Dahlin, Middelstadt and Eichel.....things are looking bright for Buffalo. Eichel gonna contend fir the Art Ross next year if je stays healthy, Middelstadt...this kid is special.

Agreed. These are good pieces to build something good for the future.

Like I said, kidding, of course it will help them! I just remember all the hilarity surrounding the McDavid draft year and the conspiracy theorists.

Every team would love to have this #1 pick. He is the Mcdavid for D.

Have not heard anything like that about this kid? Do you have an article you can share or something that says he equates to that? Love to read more about him.

I don't know if he is the McDavid of d-men, but I have heard people say, i.e. TSN analysts, that he is a generational d-man. People seem to like to throw that term around a bit too much for my liking. For me, the last three generational players are: Lemieux, Crosby and McDavid. I know everyone in TO likes to say Mathews is also, but I am not so sure.

They say that he is arguably the most pro ready defenseman in years. 8 years younger than any other player on Team Sweden at the Olympics, and the first minor to compete in the event in almost 35 years.

He is being compared to Erik Karlsson, with a higher ceiling.

He might not pan out but he is the highest hyped d-man ever, yes I said it, ever!!! Now will it just be hype (after watching him in a few tournaments I'd say he's the real deal). Was hoping my Isles could of got him because he instantly makes a team better but wait 2-3 years! yowsers he's going to be special!!!

They used the term generational d on Hedman too. Just an elite level dman. Highly skilled and poised, so he will definitely help the Sabres. With Risto, the 2 Rasmus' will be the top pair.

What is key is making their 2nd round pick count too.

Future of Sabres:

Eichel, Middelstadt, Nylander, Reinhart. Rasmus twins.

darkhorses that could bolster team: Olofsson and Pilut. See how Asplund progresses. Rodrigues could be a consistent NHLer.

Complement that will some decent vets and all they need to get is a decent goalie. Not sure if Ullmark is cut out to be a #1 in the NHL, but he has had success in the A. Just needs to find consistency. If Sabres develop him well, could be their equivalent to Hellebucyk.

The fact that NYI got a non-lottery protected 1st from Calgary as part of the Hamonic trade is bonus enough for NYI. Plus with Barzal dropping in the his draft, that was pretty awesome. I really had no idea why Boston did not pick him. (especially with Senyshyn pick). Boston would look crazy nuts with Barzal too. If Boston had decided to go for 3 different forward positions that year, it would have been Barzal, Debrusk, and Kyle Conner. Ummm...that's pretty crazy.

One of our local radio guys ran the NHL draft simulator 30 times before he ended up getting NYI with 2 out of the top 3 lottery picks. I think it was 2nd and 3rd overall. That would have been nuts. But it was fun to dream...

About time we get the first pick. The draft lottery thing is so dumb it's hard to watch. Carolina is drafting second which is just ridiculous.

FINALLY. I'm glad we finally got lucky here.

I feel real bad for Arizona though, they are consistently getting screwed with this process and it's ridiculous.

never won it before.

I think he meant that Buffalo has had the 1st overall pick before. Perreault (sort of a lottery), and Turgeon.

I think you were referring to the modern lottery, and despite having worst record two other times, and many non-playoff finishes, Sabres have only won the lottery once. Eichel is still a decent consolation prize. Reinhart instead of Ekblad is too early to tell. Although Draisaitl looking like the better pick at 3.

Plus it was probably tough for Sabres fans (and all other fans) to watch Edmonton keep winning the lottery or move up. With that said, one of those 1st overall picks was Nail Yakupov.

Don't forget - had Buffalo let Vanek walk after the Oilers sent their offer sheet, they could have had those Edmonton picks for 4 years (Colton Teubert - picked by Kings, Pääjärvi, Hall, RNH). I'm glad they've got a very good GM now in Botterill, but as a Sabres fan until 2007 I'm not confident that Regier would have picked anything better than boogers.

That would have been crazy.

If there was a GM that was confident enough in their scouting team and trading skills, then the 4 1st round picks could turn out way better, even if the picks aren't 1st overall.

I know hindsight is 20/20 but it's fun to see what a skilled scouting team could have possibly come up with.

After Vanek's offer was matched, the Oilers went after Dustin Penner, in which the Ducks declined and ended up with the 12th overall pick, which was later traded back to edmonton, which eventually ended up with the Sabres, who picked Tyler Myers.

If the Sabres weren't high on Teubert at 13th, they could have taken a smooth skating Swede drafted at 15th named Erik Karlsson.

So from 2008 draft, Sabres could have ended up with Myers and Karlsson.

The 2009 draft wasn't great, and let's assume that Edmonton would have done a bit better with Vanek, and Buffalo a little worse without him. The 10th and 13th pick might have been switched around anyway, so Sabres could have ended up with Kassian and Paajarvi. Kreider was the next best winger available. But if the Sabres wanted to continue to build from the back end out (like how Nashville has), they could have drafted Ellis and Leddy. That would be nice solid future top 4.

2010 draft would have have been gold for Buffalo if Edmonton had finished near the bottom. Even if they didn't get 1st overall, Seguin at 2nd would be huge too. If Buffalo's pick was a bit higher (because they would be rebuilding instead of trying to make the playoffs), they would have had a shot at Schwartz or Terasenko.

With the 2011 draft, if the pick happened to be top 3, RNH, Landeskog and Huberdeau could have ended up on the Sabres. Sabres may have taken Armia still with their pick since they would be desperate to find a RW/right shot to fill the void from Vanek, but that was a weak draft for RW.

But with Ryan Miller in peak all star form, it would be hard to a GM to decide to go with a re-build. Mind you, having Myers, Karlsson, and Hall/Seguin would have sped up this process.

But Sabres now have Eichel, Mittelstadt, Nylander, Ristolainen and Dahlin to build around.
