No not Kyle! So with Paul Statsny's recent tear is the calder up for grabs. All year it has been assumed that it was Malkins. Malkin has 69 points and Statsny has 63. Should be a close vote (unless Statsny continues his tear and wins it hands down!) I remember at the start of the year how everyone was saying he had nice moves but was too slow (were you mixing him up with his brother). Anyway, what do you think of the Calder race?
 
Don't forget Staal who broke a record last night with his 7th shorthanded goal of the season as a rookie. ( I know he has no shot just wanted to point it out). He now has to go for the single season record of 13 in 88-89 :eek: , held by none other than the Magnificent one ;)

Back to the topic (sorry for the shameless Mario plug) I think Malkin will hold on for the trophy in the end. But good to see others making it a race, should be interesting.

Don't forget Stastny has a franchsie rookie record 16 game point scoring streak and could tie Selanne's NHL record this evening versus Buffalo. That may come into play if he gets even or clsoe to Malkin's totals.

Plus Malkin plays on a much better team with much better players.

That's ok, I think over the course of a career Kopitar's numbers will rival those of Malkin and be better than Statsny's.

Staal is too one-dimensional, he needs some more all around game, still a good young talent.

Kessel is having an ok year as well, and what about Colorado's other rookie Wojtek Wolski?:confused:

Remember, you can't really ever ask Mike about anything hockey, since he doesn't know anything else exists outside of the Pens (or is that the KC Rib Cookers :eek: )! :p ;) :)

Stastny has quietly went about his business all year. I think it would be hilarious if a guy won the Calder after not being part of the Young Stars game during the All-Star break....at that point I believe he was 3rd in rookie scoring, correct me if I am wrong though. I still think in the end they give it to Malkin though, regardless.

The problem with your boy Kopitar Barrie, aside from the fact he looks like a Vampire :p is the fact he is playing on a team that hasn't made much noise and isn't in the spotlight...sad, but true...same will hold true for Stastny I believe.
 
Didn't Malkin miss a good chunk of the first month of the season? If so, wouldn't it be his trophy to lose?
 
Paul Stastny for ROY?!?!?!

I'm sure we were all ready to hand the ROY trophy to Mr. Malkin a few months ago, but with his two assists last night and his current 17 game point streak Paul Stastny has moved within 4 POINTS of the NHLs rookie point scoring race!!

Undervalued rookies, perhaps??

I say in order to win it he's got to finish 5-10 points ahead of Malkin in the race. One, because he'll likely have played a handful more games, and two, Malkin will have more goals. But it's definately turned into a race. Should be an exciting final few weeks to the season.
 
He may undervalued, but it's tough to say what guys are gonna be hobby darlings down the road. Shoot, Heatley is on pace to score 50 this year and you can't give his stuff away.... Mike

Shawn, good point on the Young Stars tilt, that would be kind of funny.:rolleyes:

And Kopitar looks more like Herman Munster I am told.:eek: Then again, my friend who told em that is a Ducks fan!;)

And yeah, it is tough to play in the West, especially the Pacific/Mountain Time Zones and garner any good post-season hardware love.:(

Whew, good thing Ryan! You'll need all the rest you can get because in about 3-4 years the Kings will have you up all night with nightmares about them laying it to the Flames!:cool:

LOL - Barrie, in 3-4 years I'll be old with a weak heart and I won't be able to handle watching Flames hockey any more, period. :(
 
All the spotlight is on Malkin so unless he goes into a major tailspin I think he will win it. Let's not forget the other rookies that have made a name for themselves on the blueline as well. Ian White here in Toronto has played a solid game all year and has shown flashes of being a very good offensive defencemen and has a solid positional defensive game. He's too small to be a rugged bruiser, but he gets the job done..

About Heatley, many people didn't forget his car accident, and all the story around the death of Snyder. The bad season he had after, and all.....


I'm wondering where Stastny record run will end.
