Canadian dollar keeps dropping

Doesn't look good for the Canadian dollar.

We talk about all the issues in the hobby but I think this is the biggest issue. I've seen people bemoaning the lack of big deals and I think this is part of the issue.

I know personally I've thought twice about certain purchases only because I know I'm going to get nailed on the exchange.

Sad part is it doesn't look like it's going to get better any time soon.
 
oh yeah. This is killing our ability (as Canadians) to get into bidding wars on eBay, or to plunk down a bunch of USD for a higher end purchase.

I wonder about trying to sell in Canadian dollars though..... could it make auctions more successful? Canadian buyers are not scared off by the exchange rate, and potential American bidders see that they get 30% off.



Also believe you're right, it's not going to change anytime soon. We're at an 11 year low, and I wonder how far away a sub-70 cent dollar is.
 
A big part of this isn't that the Canadian $ is dropping on global markets, the US $ is getting stronger, most major companies. deal in US $, overall it's not a bad thing, for collecting it sucks if you buy stuff from the states, but it's nothing new.
 
I've noticed more and more Canadian Ebay sellers are selling using Canadian $$, and to be honest I'm more willing to bid if they do as $20 US plus shipping quickly turns in $35 Can.

Don't disagree, a low dollar has some economic advantages but for a collector trying to buy cards from the US it can get costly!
 
Apart from the hobby.. this is a scary thing globally speaking.
Thankfully I am in a position to not to be too worried as I work on behalf of banks.
If oil goes to $30 a barrel.. holy shiz... I have already begun saving a bit more in case of anything goes wrong or interest rates on my mortgage uptick in the wrong direction..

I still love the hobby but i feel this will stretch people into a very thin space.
 
The recovery of the US dollar is a major piece of it. The continued oil glut is another - and you can thank former PM Harper for that, yoking our economy and our dollar to the price of oil.

This is also going to have significant impact on the health of the NHL. The first few years after the 2004-5 lockout saw enormous growth in the revenue stream, largely on the strength of the Canadian dollar. In the face of dwindling exchange rates, the League is likely to face lower revenues...which in turn will likely start making those billionaires and millionaires cranky again.

Actually...the CAD $ and Oil have been married for far longer than that. Fact is, Canada's economy is directly linked to our resources...it been this way for a lonnnnng time. The oil glut is a matter of the Saudi's not cutting production...and why would they,nobody else is. Our foremost problem is not using our OWN oil for ourselves. NOT importing oil would go a longgggg way to stabilizing our economy...but that will never happen because Canada's Premiers cant even see eye to eye to build pipelines to make this happen even though they recieve billions in equalization payments...things are gonna get quite intresting for Ontario and Quebec once the NDP are finished with Alberta and the tap is dry.
If we as a country continue to let others tell us what we can and cant do, we are doomed.

From a card prospective it doesnt really change my habits at all, I continue to chase cards but have my limits as I always have. Yes, I will get beat out by Americans more than usual but thats ok, it makes the chase that more challenging!! Wax itself will get punished more and more by the exchange which really sucks for those that enjoy that end of the hobby.
 
This is hurting big time, there is the ultimate pc card for up for auction right now and it's projecting to go way beyond my price point based on the fact that for every $100 it reach's I have to add another $30+ to the cost.
Even with saving for this to one day go up it's looking like it won't happen.
 
Won a card this morning. 21.10 delivered, turned into 29.43... 39.5% exchange.

That's enough to kill the impulse buy or make one think about a BIN that's a bit too high (but manageable).

Well said. If it were simply oil prices we would be fine as Canada purchases its oil from the US. The oil we produce is expensive which makes it difficult for oil companies to invest (think offshore not oilsands).
Our hobby survived the 90s when the CDN $ was a lot lower than it is today
 
look at the bright side if you live in a border city........... I filled up my dodge ram for 28 dollars US....... needle was almost at empty
