Ironman Indy
2009 Most Generous Member of the Year,
Recently there was a thread showing off Leaf goalie cards and I posted most of the Leafs Goalie RCs throughout their history
As the Vintage section needs a bit of action, (Thanks Scott) I decided I would honour the Habs great goaltending history with my RC collection
Enjoy
1917-25
Only one goalie for the first 8 years. The man, the myth, the legend.
Not Mine (but I wish it was!)
1925-26
Herb Rheaume took over with Lacroix filling in for 5 games after Vezina retire in November due to TB
1926-33
The George Hainsworth era
Worters was loaned from the Americans as a one game injury replacement in 1930
Murray was a one game call up as well the same year
1933-34
Lorne Chabot takes over for one year
1934-38
Wilf Cude takes over full time after starting on game in 33-34
I need the 1935 OPC RC of Cude so here is a Crown Brand from that era
Other goalies to fill in for an injured Cude included Abbie Cox, Paul Gauthier with 1 game each and Hainsworth returned for a 4 game stint in 36-37
1938-39
Claude Bourque and Cude split time as the starters
1939-40
Bourque takes over as the #1 guy with Cude and Mike Karakas splitting a dozen games between them
1940-41
Bourque is sent to the Rangers for Bert Gardiner who takes over as the #1 goalie with Cude and Paul Bibeault getting a few starts each
1941-42
Bibeault takes over with the majority of the starts and Gardiner plays in 10 games
1942-43
Bibeault is the man for all 50 games
1943-50
Captain Bill Durnan is the Habs goalie for all except a handful of games during this period.
Bibeault had 10 starts in 45-46 and Gerry McNeil gets a few starts before taking over in 1950
1950-52
McNeil starts all 140 games over this 2 year span
1952-53
McNeil gets the bulk of the starts but Jacques Plante debuts starting 3 games + 4 in the playoffs. Hal Murphy replaces an injured McNeil for one game
1953-54
McNeil still gets the lion's share of the starts and Plante plays in 17 games
1954-63
The Plante era officially begins as he becomes the #1
Other goalies to start during this era include
Charlie Hodge, Claude Evans, Andre Binette, Bob Perreault, Len Broderick, Don Aiken, Claude Cyr, Claude Pronovost, Cesare Maniago and Ernie Wakely
Len Broderick RC
1963-64
Hodge takes over as the #1
Gump Worsley starts 8 games and Jean-Guy Morissitte fills in for an injured Gump in his lone NHL appearance
1964-66
Worsley and Hodge share duties with Gump getting the majority the first year then Hodge the next
1966-67
The last year of the Original Six sees Rogie Vachon join the squad sharing his backup role with Gump while Hodge is the main man. Gary Bauman starts 2 games and is lost to the North Stars in the Expansion Draft
1967-69
Rogie and Gump platoon for 2 years with Tony Esposito starting his career
with 13 appearance in 68-69 before being lost to Chicago in teh Intra-League Draft. Wakely returns for a 1 game stint after almost a decade in the minors
1969-71
Vachon is the #1 with Phil Myre as his backup. Gump sees 6 more games in 69-70 before being traded to Minnesota. Ken Dryden plays in 6 games during the regular season of 70-71 before leading the Habs to a Cup winning the Conn Smythe along the way
1971-79
Dryden would win 5 more Cups in the 70s giving him 6 in 8 years before retiring. Wayne Thomas would fill in for the 73-74 season as Dryden worked at a law firm.
Bunny Larocque would be Ken's only backup (74-79) starting as Wayne's backup in 73-74.
Other Habs goalies to see time in the early 70s were Denis DeJordy and Michel Plasse.
1979-81
Larocque splits time with Denis Herron with Richard Sevigny seeing limited action as a rookie. The three of them would share the duties in 80-81 with a young Rick Wamsley gettign ready to take over with 5 appearances.
1981-82
Wamsley is the man as Herron and Sevigny start less games. Mark Holden makes an appearance. He would appear in 4 games over 3 years
1982-84
Wamsley and Sevigny platoon for a couple years and Steve Penney gets 4 starts before taking over the following year
1984-85
Penney's one year to shine with Doug Soetaert as his backup. A young goalie from Quebec sees a period of action before exploding onto the scene in 85-86
1985-86
Penney and Soetaert give way to Patrick Roy and the rest is history
I'll stop here as we enter the non vintage 90s
I hope you enjoyed this trip through :habs: goaltending history!
