Headed into the first day of free agency I thought that this might be an insightful tool for some to see where their team stands with regards to their cap space, and the number of players that they have under contract.
I got the info off of nhlnumbers; it's the best, most accurate site that I've found with regards to this.

Obviously there are a number of teams that have an internal cap that is lower than the actual cap, but these numbers are in relation to the actual salary cap.

The Rangers only have 9 guys committed for next year?? That's crazy... looks like the Flames may have some cap issues come the end of the year again as well.

..good work! are you sure you didn't forget a didgit or put the decimal in the wrong spot with the flames number..LOL...

No I didn't ;). At the draft the fan960 interviewed Paaul Kelly, and he said that officials from the league were going to be "talking" with the Flames to let them know that what they did at the end of last season shouldn't be happening again. The Flames are either going to have to fill the roster with youngsters from the farm or they're going to have to trade someone; when they first got the rights to Bouwmeester the rumor (and only that) was that Olli could possibly move.

As far as the Wings are concerned not sure how accurate that is. It says 16 guys but I guess that's not counting the kids that are already under contract. Reality for the Wings is they have at least 19-20 signed with roughly 3-4 million left.
Only guys they have left to sign are Hudler and Leino.

Olli eh? hmmm.. can't see that, flames have been looking for a #1 centre for Jarome for like 8 yrs, now we get one and they are looking to move him? Doesn't make sence to me.......but they need money/space..

You're right in that Howard, Ericcson, Helm, and Abdelkader are not counted right now against the cap; however the actual salries including these four is 53.750 against a 56.8 million dollar cap. This is not the number that will be used though these fours cap hit is 2.999 million. This leaves 2.546 to re-sign Hudler, Leino and 1 other player.

EDIT: Forgot to put in there the actual cap hit would wind up being 54.254 M.

Cap troubled teams? Rangers are not amongst the bunch in the overspend size.
Over the upper limit:
Ottawa +3.0M (due to Kovalev's $5.0M signing)
Boston +112K (could throw someone into the AHL...)

Under the lower limit:
Atlanta -4.34M
Nashville -1.74M
NY Islanders -5.4M (think Tavares will help lower this a bit...)
Phoenix -420K (easily remedied by signing RFAs)

Another update after the relavative flurry of signings today.

Boston isn't over the cap. . .yet; and Ottawa only 1.3 over will be fine if they trade Heatley. With Ottawa though they have a full 23 players signed. They know exactly where they stand; a number of these other teams really don't and I think they are in much more trouble than the Sens.

The tally I used included Tuukka Rask's cap hit. They have an interesting situation with Kessel still to be signed...
