Yeah true, but I just saw that Varlamov signed with the Avs so I'm happy with that. I was afraid he'd go to the KHL. But this will prove to be the steal of the 2011 UFA class.
 
wow, I am whole heartedly suprised. My only concern now is where the contracts for Alzner and Brouwer are going to come from after the other signings. I see a Green or Semin trade coming at some point this summer.
 
how does a free agent get screwed? I mean he saw a few teams go other ways, and has evidently decieded to go another direction, I dont see this as him being "screwed". I can say I like the signing of course because its a steal, but I like the fact that he is an experienced veteran to help in Neuvirths development.

Now if you want to talk about a goalie getting screwed, call and ask Holtby how he feels right at this moment after the exhiliration of seeing a chance at making the big club yesterday, go right out the window today.
 
Wow, I really REALLY like what the Caps have done so far. Adding Brouwer and Ward at forward is brilliant, and just what that team needed especially for the playoffs. If Vokoun plays to his all star capability, they are going to be very tough year, love it.

Good signings for the Caps and love the vokoun signing especially if he can guide Neuvirth.If he runs with the number one and plays amazing then great otherwise besides one questionable signing not a bad free agent blitz ;)

While the money might be slightly high for the forwards, the signing of Vokoun was pure genius. No. Madness!!!!

They got stronger without losing any key pieces (except Arnott I guess).
 
Capitals sign former Leaf Hanson to one-year deal

Former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Christian Hanson will look to continue his hockey career as a member of the Washington Capitals organization.

The 25-year-old forward signed one-year deal with the club on Monday.

Hanson played in 58 games with the Toronto Marlies last season and recorded 13 goals and 21 assists. He appeared with the Maple Leafs in six games and did not record a point.

Hanson was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by Toronto in 2009.
 
Capitals re-sign Perreault to a one-year contract

The Washington Capitals have re-signed centre Mathieu Perreault to a one-year contract.

The 23-year-old played in 35 games for the Capitals last season, scoring seven goals and adding seven assists.

The Drummondville, Quebec-native also recorded 11 goals and 24 assists in 34 regular-season games for the Hershey Bears of the AHL.

In 56 career NHL games with Washington, Perreault has scored 11 goals and 12 assists, adding 26 penalty minutes. Perreault was originally drafted by the Capitals in the sixth round, 177th overall, of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
 
Capitals sign defenceman Alzner to two-year contract

The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Karl Alzner to a two-year contract.

“We feel he's an important part of our defensive core who logs critical minutes against other teams' top players,” said the team's vice president and general manager George McPhee.

Alzner scored two goals and 10 assists in a full 82-game campaign with the Caps last season. He also recorded an assist in nine playoff games and was tied for second on the team with 20 blocked shots.

In 133 career games over parts of three seasons with the Capitals, Alzner has scored three goals and added 19 assists while racking up 34 penalty minutes.

The Burnaby, B.C.-native has represented Canada on a number of occasions, including winning two gold medals at the World Junior Championship with Canada in 2007 and again in 2008, when he served as team captain.

Alzner was drafted by Washington in the first round, fifth overall, of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Love the Alzner signing,thought he was a great part of our Dmen.Perreault is good for third line center so good for depth.Everything is coming together nicely but I still really thought we would go after a sparkplug tikkanen,hunter kind of player.
 
i've watched joel ward and tomas vokoun play here in nashville and there is NO WAY ward is worth 2x what vokoun is worth. i think the caps overpayed for ward, then got vokie way cheap. just my .02

It's all relative to positional needs. More teams need a strong power forward-type right now than a starting goalie. Vokoun didn't have many doors to knock on with so many teams having signed their starters already. He's also made a good chunk of change in his career, and at some point, you're probably at that realization that with the money you've already made and banked, 1.5M to stay and play in the States with your family already is better than 2 or 3 overseas where you have to uproot them and start over.
 
As of right now, the Caps are $890,000 over the cap with 8 defenseman signed as of right now, so i assume one or two of them are gone before the season.

As of right now, what does this have to do with how much better Fleury is than every other non-Pens goalie ever, or about injuring players on other teams as of right now?

Yes, I should stick to the topic; actually discuss the free agents the team has signed , as opposed to stating their current number of defensemen and their salary cap situation. Good advice.
I think that Vokoun is an outstanding signing, as I've stated in other threads. He may not be on the same level as Rinne/Thomas/Luongo, but he's a heck of a goalie for the low price they got him for. He provides some veteran stability in net, which scares me as a fan of an Eastern Conference opponent. I think the Caps are the scariest team in the East because of him.
I think the overpayed for Ward, however. He's a very good player...that's about it. But I know that other very good players were getting more in FA this year, including Laich...so it's all relative. I think these 2 moves will really help put them above the one-and-done team they've been in the past, and shore up some of the defensive issues they've had.
