Folks,

Surprised there hasn't been talk of this already in Hobby Talk. Check out this post in the game-worn forum:

A number of fairly well-known memorabilia dealers busted for selling fake gamers, many of which went to card companies for use in cards. They would beat up and scuff the jerseys to make them look like they were used in games then provide fake LOA's.

Doesn't say which companies but it should be pretty unsettling to memorabilia card collectors. People have doubted UD's memorabilia for years but what if Panini bought from them? Or even ITG? I wonder if card companies will come forward and admit if they bought from these sources or not now that such information is out there.

Discouraging news for collectors for sure.

I have a buddy that did the photoshoot for Henrik Karlsson from the Flames. He had 10-12 jerseys and he put each one on and they took a photo. That is all they did. Karlsson actually asked if he had to put each one on
 
The only positive aspect of all of this is .. at least we don't have game work jock straps placed in cards.. LOL..
 
I've had my doubts over the years. Don't forget people Pacific was faking game used cards. I remember they were specifically caught faking bat cards. But if they faked baseball, why not hockey too?

Pacific got caught putting cork pieces in bat relics. They were accused of faking all of their game used including jerseys and patches. They did however confess later down the road after going out of business that the bat relics were faked, after someone tore apart some of the cards and studied the pieces. If they faked baseball, I wouldn't doubt them faking hockey.

Here's one article where this guy arrested said he "bought back" the fake stuff he sold companies, but I dunno how much truth there is behind that:

No one can guarantee the truth behind everything, but these stories tell me enough to stay away from game used for now on.

This is why I'm slowing down my buying of game used and starting to collect the fossil cards instead, we know those are legit, it says so on the back of the card....
 
lol yea I've had my opinions on the authenticity of game used cards...Sounded kinda simple to fake them without a lot of people knowing, but eventually someone figures something out. Like Omare's pro bowl jersey from Topps. Now how the HELL does Topps explain that!?
 
I've never really believe the whole game used aspect of cards. I stopped collecting jerseys not long after I started collecting cards, so early 2004 maybe, cause I just didn't know if every card I had really was game used. How could you, because the back of the card says so?
 
To Our Collectors

Although none of the names look familiar to me, we are researching our purchases during the time period.

Typically, we don't buy hockey jerseys from these types of individuals or companies.

We source jerseys from legitimate sources and have our own authenticator who has years and years of experience including working for the Hall of Fame.

Can someone get fooled, I guess, nobody is perfect.

We got fooled once accepting a COA from the NHLPA for a goalie jersey that was supposed to be game-worn but was game-issued, but we found our mistake and redeemed the single card made. I still have the jersey with one piece cut out of it.

I doubt if the other manufacturers will come on the boards to discuss this point, but I welcome them too. We have been making game-used hockey memorabilia cards since 1998 and take our game-used jerseys very seriously.

I have been a collector of hockey jerseys for over 20 years, am I an expert, no but I know enough to have experts around me.

Most of these individuals and companies dealt in baseball and football and as I mentioned earlier, don't look familiar to me.

To take the actions of a few criminals and paint it all over the legitimate hobby is not fair.

The state that photo-shoot jerseys are better collectables than game-worn is pure non-sense.

Again, these are my opinions and I am sure others have theirs.

Anyone who has been to our offices can attest to the fact that we take the term "game-worn" very, very, very seriously.
