card grading question

i have tried to sell/trade this messier black 1/1 card one or twice but the more i look at it the more i like it, so im thinking of sending it away to be graded. has anyone seen any of the masterpieces cards graded and if so do they grade good?

here is the card, its in good shape no dinged corners or scratches.

Grade it. Alot of people are against grading, however if you are keeping it long term get it done! If you have seen those videos of how much abuse the BGS holders take then it is worth it just for protection.
 
my reason for haveing it graded would be, its a decent player who led two teams to two stanley cups and a hof'er and with it being a 1/1 it just makes it that much better. i do plan on keeping it for some time, but i have also noticed that crads that do have a good bgs grade tend to sell for a little more than the ungraded version. and of corse for personal satisfaction and protection.

if you have the extra cash to get it slabbed go for it, but remember high bgs grade sales #'s don't really apply to this one since there will be no ungraded version if you do sell it down the road ;)
 
yes i understand that about there being no other to compair it to because of the # on it. but just say i could sell it now for 100, and with it being being grader with a good grade i should be able to get maybe 150 or more fot it.

You most likely won't be able to get more for it even if you get a BGS 9.5

The reasons being:

1. There is only 1 copy, so there is no population report to trump
2. This is not a rookie card
3. Many people do not like buying/storing slabbed cards

So I think you would actually be limiting your already limited audience.
 
OK, just so I understand...

You can sell it for 100, but are willing to ship it, pay $20 to get it graded, in the hopes of being able to extract another $50?

That's a ton of risk for very little reward. What if the card gets lost or damaged in transit? What if you don't get the grade you want?

I'm not a fan of grading for anything that isn't vintage (vintage grading does have a place in this hobby)... so take it for what it's worth.
 
I agree with both sides in a way.

1. Grading for profit on this card is beyond pointless. You will never be able to know if you made out on the exchange, and so there's no value in grading it.

2. Grading for protection if you're keeping it is worthwhile.

You need to make a call, but I would very highly (read 99.9%) doubt that grading this particular card would be worthwhile from a profit perspective.

Read what everyone else has said. I dont think your fully understanding this. Certain cards, liek a Crosby YG, sell for morwe when they are a BGS 9.5, because many people would rather have the 9.5 then the raw one and the 9.5 is somewhat supperior in there opinion to the raw ones. In this case, its irrelevant. It coudl grade out at a 7, and you woudl still get the same as a 9.5, or if it was raw. If a messier collector wants it, they have to get it. they cant wait for another one to come along.
 
Hello, great card but unfortunately you will not get a nice grade for centering on this card. It is hard to see aything else looking at a scan. I do send things out to graded often, I am not claiming to be an expert but I do fairly well on my submissions. If you are going to grade it, grade it for protection. Good luck on your decision.
 
I'll have to agree with everyone and say if you want to hold onto it longterm or preserve it, send it in, if you are selling now, no.
