CBJ fans pushed to the brink

Nobody is going to want Carter's contract. He'll likely be a Bluejacket for a while....

I was having a chat with a fellow Habs fan this morning and the notion of Carter-for-Pleks-plus-??? came up. It's an interesting concept - Carter would fill the role of "big right-handed C" that the Habs have needed for a long time now, but the loss of Plekanec means that a very valuable all-purpose, all-situations homegrown talent needs to be replaced. I won't make any little girl jokes regarding playoffs performances. LOL

Carter's deal has a cap hit that is only $.272M higher than Plekanec's, but of course it runs for the next 10 years whereas Pleks only has 4 more years.

When you look at Montreal's organizational depth at the centre position right now you have:
Desharnais
Eller
Plekanec
Gomez
White
Leblanc
Bournival
Engqvist

There's tools there and some reinforcements down the line in the future. DD and Eller have both been much better than Plek & Gomez for most of this year, and they should be around for the foreseeable future. In the big picture, it's an interesting talking point, if nothing else.

As Richard hinted at, the biggest issue with Carter's contract isn't the cap hit: it's the length. At $5.72mill a year, he's a bargain for a potential perennial 40 goal scorer. 6 years from now when he's on the backside of his prime and still has oodles of time left on the contract? Notsomuch.

I think the biggest problem with CBJ over the years is player development, which is somewhat related to the drafting. Plus what didn't help was some early success for the team so instead of picks being in top 3, they mostly were 4-10. Plus none of the later round picks really panned out to be even 3rd or 4th liners.

Nash is the only pick that has panned out and more because of his natural ability.

Klesla was 4th overall and I think he was defenseman of the year candidate in one of the Canadian junior leagues (OHL I think).

CBJ rush their young players. There was some backlash when Hitch wasn't using the younger players. Maybe it was because they weren't ready. Klesla never played in the AHL, it was straight from OHL to NHL. Pretty tough for a d-man. Same with Brule.

Brule was a great junior player, but everyone knew that he had to still bulk up. Instead CJB rushed him, he got injured, getting a fractured sternum, losing a year of development, and more importantly losing confidence.

Even when players seem to develop well, management/coach seem to mess it up. The handling of Brassard is a total mess.

Then with Steve Mason, they anoint him the starter after his rookie season. Obviously, he still needed some more time to develop. Now the pressure is on him b/c he's got the big contract and the starting job is his to lose. It all came too easy, and when Mason didn't play as well b/c of consistency issues, it messed with his confidence.

Plus management has been unable/unwilling to re-sign players. I remember Stralman played well for CBJ, put up some decent numbers, and then he was gone as an UFA b/c he didn't receive a qualifying offer.

CBJ has the wrong hockey people and the set up is all wrong. With the expansion, fans were willing to go thru some tough times to build a winner, but that free pass has been squandered away. I don't know if you can ask them to go thru another 5 years as a bottom feeder to build the team up correctly, but that's what it's going to take, with the RIGHT people, which isn't there right now.

With current management/player development, CBJ will find a way to mess up Yakupov too. There are a few teams that I have zero confidence in their player development, CBJ is one of them.

In our fantasy keeper pool (since 1993), there's a few other GMs that feel the same as I do with CBJ. If I had the 1st overall pick in our draft and Yakupov as picked by CBJ, I'd trade my pick away. Filatov was picked 2nd overall in our draft in his draft year.

They also have a couple young guys in the AHL. Matt Calvert and Cam Atkinson are 2 young guys that are fast and will continue to only get better... Atkinson could win ROY in the AHL and if you look at a few of the past ROY in the AHL they are pretty decent NHL players... Gerbe Ennis and Luke Adam...

Someone will take that contract, and Colombus will take a long term contract back in return. The Jackets won't keep him - he clearly does not want to be there.

i wonder if Columbus would take Bernier and Alec Martinez for Carter? they could use a goalie (time to admit Mason isn't the goalie of the future) and Martinez is a quality young d-man that is very good on the PP.

Columbus might have to take Penner's expiring contract and send Sanford to make the deal work, but I think it would help both teams.

the question for the Kings is if they want to reunite Richards and Carter again.

This whole protest thing seems to be gaining a bit of attention on the tube here. I fail to see how a mob of folks chanting and what-not in the rain outside the arena will do anything. The only thing that will get the attention of the owner is empty seats and a lot of them.

Mike Brown finally woke up to the error of his ways the last 22 years when people stopped going to Bengals games. As in 20-25K empty seats every game. NFL mind you but changes were made and I can bet my house he wouldn't have done a damn thing had those seats not been empty.

I get the sense that ownership itself is clueless. Much like the Bengals, if the guy steering the ship has no compass it's hard to expect those below him to do the right thing either.

letter I got via email today as I am on the mailing list from when a few ex Whalers was on the team

Dear Blue Jackets Fan,

My father held a longstanding belief that a major league sports franchise would prove an important catalyst in the growth and development of Columbus. After more than 30 years of effort, the opportunity to make his belief reality presented itself with the NHL awarding a franchise to Columbus in 1997. To my mind, it is clear he was right in his vision. With the Blue Jackets and the Arena as the anchor, Nationwide Insurance has brought vibrancy to our downtown in the Arena District that simply wouldn't have happened without the team.

That said, there is no question our on-ice performance is nowhere near what it needs to be. All of you are disappointed and many are angry. I and the entire Blue Jackets organization share these feelings. I thought as we approached mid-season at the All-Star break, it would be a good time to reflect on where we've been and offer some thoughts about how we go forward. We have taken actions and will continue our push to improve.

Toward the end of last season, we did a thorough evaluation of our team's strengths and weaknesses. From there, a plan was developed balancing our needs against our tradable assets. During the summer, we believed we executed the plan well and took a good step forward. Most people seemed to agree and we were excited for the season to start.

Unfortunately and surprisingly, we opened the season terribly and have struggled ever since. Disappointing is not a strong enough word.

We began looking at why our team was not performing at an acceptable level very early this season and assessing where we are and where we want to go. We added Craig Patrick, an experienced and highly respected figure in the hockey community, as a senior advisor to assist in this endeavor. While this process is not complete, we have clearly defined our options and are finalizing our plans.

I understand you want to know what we're going to do to fix this, but it is important for us to maintain a degree of discretion to prevent putting ourselves at a competitive disadvantage. I can tell you action will be taken in the coming weeks and months, be it around the trade deadline, the entry draft and/or free agency that will be indicative of our direction.

Our goal as an organization is to build a team that wins consistently and competes for the Stanley Cup. Anything less is unacceptable! Everything we do in the coming weeks, months and years will be done to that end and everyone in our organization – myself, management, staff, coaches and players – will be held to that standard.

I am very thankful and appreciative of the dedication and passion you have shown as a Blue Jackets fan and I am committed to giving you a team of which you can be proud.

Sincerely,

John P. McConnell

wow their picks are almost worst then Montreal (Alfie Turcotte in 83 was the best ever! lol).
Move the team to Quebec City...nothing to do in Columbus. :)

and now they are reporting that we get the all star game next year... that would be funny for them to come out in front of the protesters and make the announcement..

The NHL will spin it that look at all the CBJ fans showing up just for an announcement of hosting an all star game..

My two fav quotes from another board.
"How embarrassing would it be to HOST the All-Star Game, but have no All-Stars on the ice?"
and
"Wow, a game where both teams have NHL talent?? This is new".
