Chael Sonnen tests positive for PED's after UFC 117

any new developments on this? i've been searching sherdog and other forums but so far just the initial announcement, a bunch of troll jobs and some rumours.

I don't think there are to many fighters not taking some sort of performance enhancer. Goes for all sports. When I asked my buddy who retired from the CFL who was taking steroids he said everybody!

update: they have confirmed it as a natural steroid

Natural Steroid

but there is the possibility that there are trace amounts in over the counter medication that he may have taken prior to the fight.

List of OTC meds

he has 30 days to file an appeal and he has yet to make a statement regarding this issue. so let's not jump to conclusions so quick shall we?

Looks like he told George Dodd about it at the weigh-ins... http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/mma/09/20/sonnen.drugtest/index.html

Sonnen, 33, of West Linn, Ore., was apparently concerned enough about the possibility that he would render a positive test that he told CSAC executive director George Dodd he used an illegal performance enhancing drug leading up to the biggest fight of his life.

"He only indicated that he was taking it but he never indicated why," Dodd said of a conversation he and Sonnen shared during drug testing conducted by the state a day prior to the fight.

Sonnen "just let me know he was taking [something] and that's when I called over an inspector to get it documented. But when you do take it you still have to show a medical reason."

Mike...your understanding of this would be better than mine...but why wouldn't the commission then step in and subject him to testing at that point? Or are rules set in stone that the testing takes place after the match all the time?

A better question is...they caught Barnett a week before the fight occurred...how was Sonnen not subject to drug testing during training? If he was, why would he have started doping that close to the fight itself? Supposing he had his last test a week before and passed...I don't think it would've provided much benefit that close in would it?

I know that the CSAC does pre-fight testing on random fighters, which from my understanding, is where Chael's positive urine sample came from. I have yet to have a fighter from one of my shows be asked to give a pre-fight test. In regards to post-fight testing, all contestants involved in championship bouts are required to give a post-fight sample. Aside from championship bouts, from my experience, two random bouts are chosen prior to the show, and the participants of those bouts are required to give samples for testing.

Your second question... When a fighter is asked to do a pre-fight test, it's at the weigh-ins, the night before the fight. They never test during training. It's tough to say when he started doping and when he stopped. I don't know how long specific drugs stay in your system.

It's official now. Vitor takes Chael's title shot. I understand why they gave the shot to Belfort, he probably would have lost to Okami anyways and they want to capitalize on him while they can, but he doesn't even have a win at 185lbs, so he hasn't really earned it in my opinion.

And Nate Marquardt steps into the spot vacated by Vitor Belfort and will now face Yushin Okami at UFC 122.
