CHI Campbell traded to FLA

Defenceman Brian Campbell has agreed to waive his no-trade clause in order to go to the Florida Panthers.

The Chicago Blackhawks sent Campbell to the Panthers in exchange for forward Rostislav Olesz.

Campbell still has five years left in his current contract at $7.1 million per year.

The 32-year-old defenceman had 27 points and was a plus-28 last year for the Blackhawks. The former sixth-round draft pick has 312 points in 11 seasons in the league.

Olesz scored six goals and 17 points in 41 games with Florida last season. The 25-year-old former first-round draft pick missed a number of games due to injury, including a 17-game stint on the injured list with a broken finger, and the final 21 games of the season with a knee injury.

Olesz has a no-trade clause that kicks in on July 1.

I think the Panthers are just looking to meet the requirement for the Salary Cap they are at the opposite of team like the Flyers they need to reach that 48 M.

reports are coming out that the Hawks are going to buy out Olesz, trade him, or bury him in the minors. They say he will not play for the Hawks.

The Hawks found someone to take this crap contract, the GM that signed him, Tallon.

The Panthers have to add salary, even after adding Campbell's $7.1m cap hit, they are still $24m below the cap floor.


Olesz makes way too much for a 30 pts guy also. He has 3 yrs left @ $3.125m cap hit, but his contract is escalating, the actual cash owed is $11.65m making him pricier than his actual cap hit.

The talk/rumour is that the Hawks are going to buy out Olesz @ one-third the cap hit, spread out over the next six seasons. That would leave the Hawks on the hook for a little under $650,000 for the next six years, instead of more than $7m to Campbell.

The $$$ savings will let them re-sign Sharp, who is a UFA next season.

I'll take Sharp over Campbell / Olesz anyday :beer:

I'm surprised that Campbell accepted this trade to Florida since it was known that he likes to be near his hometown of Strathroy due to his preferences of teams.

Campbell's salary/cap hit reminds me of Bryan McCabe's contract since they are about similar amounts.

Campbell will bring the Panther's D back to a more respectable rating. His +/- rating will suffer but he is a decent teacher. Look what good he did in Buffalo, helping out, leading that D-group to be one of the stingiest.
He might be the factor that the Panthers need in order to get to the playoffs!?!? 7th or 8th seed? His D & O will definitely be a considering factor in a handful of games. His play will not cost the Panthers any games.
Chi-town paid great after their Stanley Cup, paid great to get it too. The purge is still ongoing, surprisingly, a good amount of the team that got them the Cup is gone. Soon, they'll be playing like they did when Eric Daze played for them.
