The salary cutting begins ...

I was hoping Buff wouldn't get moved. Sopel, Eager doesn't bother me, they can be replaced with kids (cheap $$ contracts). Buff and Sopel only have one year left (2010-11) on their contracts, Eager is a UFA.

The Hawks save about $4 mil on salary for 2010-11 on this deal when you include Aliu and Morin's money.

This now gives the Hawks 10 picks o/a with two 1st rd and three 2nd rd, 5 picks in the first 60 picks

From TSN ...

Dustin Byfuglien, along with Brent Sopel, Ben Eager and Akim Aliu, will be headed to Atlanta in exchange for the 24th overall pick at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, the 54th pick, Marty Reasoner and Jeremy Morin

The salaries had to be cut - but I think they will regret Byfuglien moving.
He is EXACTLY the type of player you need in the playoffs - when goals are much harder to get. Now who does Chitown put in front of the net????

I realize that something has to give - especially with Niemi unresolved - and it may not be done yet. But I am looking at the long run - and this type of move often hurts in crunch time.

Of course - with Atlanta - they can probably get him back at the trade deadline - LOL!!!!

Niemi has a contract just not signed yet and I think they might have a few kids that will get in front of the net. Hate to see Buff go. he drives Vancouver nuts.

Byfuglien, albeit was a MONSTER in the playoffs, the guy is the laziest guy in the nhl!! I was watching an interview with Patrick Kane and he said if "Buf" played the way he did in the playoffs all season long he'd have the potential to be at least a 40 goal scorer. The guy just doesn't try.....

I mean if the guy can't get motivated to play hard with the likes of Kane, Toews, Sharp, Keith, Seabrook, Campbell, Hossa and so on.......what are the chances that he's going to even try and produce in Atlanta.

Good luck to them....

If I'm a betting man you'll see 2 out of the following 3 traded next

Sharp
Versteeg
Bolland

Top 2 Players IMHO.

I would give my eye teeth for Sharp.
He would be deadly in Detroit - he is a sniper period.
And he kills Detroit almost every meeting.

And the answer to Byfug playing every night...........
Why he would put up numbers like Tomas Holmstrom.
End of Story.

He had some of the most points in the playoffs, cant be to lazy.

no way they trade bolland. they love him and just gave him a contract no one thought he deserved... well until he showed everyone up again by scoring timely SH goals.

Its hard to see Big Buff go, but he is lazy for most of the season. And his $4 mil can be used elsewhere right now.

As for the others having to go, maybe not? They cleared $4 mil off the cap with the deal and with the cap going up $2.5 mil, that gives em a little of clearance. And if from what I've heard and read correctly, they can send Huet to the minors and his money comes off the cap which is whole bunch more money.

Hawks wouldn't have won the cup without Byfuglien. He had a fantastic playoff and I'm a little surprised they let him go. Happy, yet surprised.
Funny to see how that whole situation pans out. Remember though even if you sent Huet down it's not going to be enough. The money you would have spent on Huet will go to Niemi.

Akim Aliu sure has had one of the most round about and rough travels to the NHL... I wonder if he'll ever get a true shot.

Sounds like Atlanta has to make another move before the trade goes down. Wouldn't be very good for the Hawks if this falls through, now that everyone knows about it.
