Classic Auctions withdrawn autographs

Noticed a pile of autographs have been withdrawn on classics (including joe Malone and Frank Nighbor). Credit for Classics for pulling them if they thought something was wrong with them, but the timing of this following the Game used bust has be a bit leary.

A fellow collector got this in his email and forwarded it to me:

Dear clients and friends


Further research on a collection of autographs listed in our current auction has raised some questions about the validity of some of these signatures. Therefore, we have decided to utilize the help of outside authenticators to validate the authenticity of all of the autographs obtained from this source.


Since we have not yet received the final report from these outside authenticators, we have decided to withdraw from the auction all of these autographs and to not offer them for sale until we have the final report on their authenticity.


We are truly sorry for any encumbrances this event may have brought.

John - Doesn't it make MORE sense in light of the bust? They've got doubt, they're pulling the items.
 
Interesting news. I don't know which ones were pulled, but when I looked thru all the vintage autographs originally there were a batch that I felt were fake.

Nice to see that they do make an effort.

Malone, Nighbor, Bullet Joe Simpson, Phat Wilson and Cyclone Taylor were pulled for sure. I'm hoping Classics will answer a couple questions as to who submitted them - if there is someone submitting fakes through these sites they should be exposed IMHO.

Q - you're right, and I wish more auction houses did this (read into that what you will).

All the autographs came from one seller: collectnuts!! on eBay. I was working with Frank on these and let him know my opinion. Dr. Price also told them of his fears, as did some other collectors. I am glad to see that they decided to pull them rather than deal with the consequences later.

Everything that guy sells appears to be fake in my opinion, the "M" on every signature is almost exactly the same each time. Not even a great attempt at faking. How does ebay still allow the guy to sell unauthenticated signatures on ebay?

I had some major concerns with many of the lots which I shared with Sean and Marc Juteau.

I am very pleased that Marc chose to withdraw the lots and have them authenticated, it shows his commitment to the hobby.

Hats off to Classic, I buy from them regularly and it is good to see they take pride in what they sell. I was very interested in several of the autos but had doubts myself. I know of one other auction house that pre-authenticates all autos before selling. Might be an option for Classic. I know it costs extra, but I would gladly pay extra for the peace of mind. Just my opinion.
