Collecting blahs...anyone else get them?

Nothing seems to excite me about collecting anymore. I still like vintage but there is so little interest here on the boards that it is boring. I live in an isolated area where no one collects so I can't even share, trade or talk with local collectors. I love the connection of vintage and my childhood but again no one to share with.

New stuff bores me. The market is saturated with auto's, GU and high over priced products and cards that I am not interested in. I have been turned off from the hobby by how big a business it has become. Seems like the fun of collecting is gone.

I started recollecting Felix Potvin hoping to spark some interest. Even that has not done it. I have flip flopped all over the place over the past few years with no luck in finding any excitement. I think I really want to collect older basketball especially Jordan and the Bulls but again there is so little activity in that area here at HI that there is no one to chat with or share with.
 
I think we all get them. my collecting has curtailed a lot, its a focus thing where i collect only autos or rookies .I only build series 1 and 2 every year. sometimes it takes a project to get you interested. i have found that non sport and MMA have renewed my interests.take a look at james bond and Big bang theory autos to see that non sport cards are crazy prices. i think in the last few years you have seen a lot of the big collectors go to non sport.I believe Quincy has a huge non sport collection with sketches and autos.I know Bruce has a simmilar collection.lots of cool stuff to look at even if you dont decide to collect , but i can guess there are a few goodies out there that you can get excited about.this in turn will keep you interested until something comes down the pipe in hockey.

I had some various sport vintage pick-ups from the Fall Expo 2011 and posted them in the respective football and baseball vintage sections. I just checked and since I made those posts... only 3 new baseball vintage posts and 3 new football vintage posts have been made. It's a wasteland!
 
I am at a similar crossroads - I have never been much of a set collector but have found some fun in putting together a couple sets and think I may try to find a couple projects from some of the newer sets to put together.

The most fun and satisfaction I seem to get these days is through my TTM projects - I really need to put some time into figuring out how to develop custom cards and start sending those out, but who the heck has the time it seems.
 
I think the lack of collectors and card shops in my area is a big part of the problem. If not for the internet and these boards I would be out of card collecting. I miss going to the card shop, card shows and chatting with other collectors face to face.
 
I honestly go through phases. currently im trying to build contacts to make a store front out of my parents hallmark store. Hoping to get it all started after i settle on my new house.
 
I've had the collecting blahs for about three years now. I get almost zero enjoyment from the hobby. The only reason I haven't given it up is that I am too f@*$$&n' stubborn (or is it stupid?) to walk away, and I have made friendships with guys like Trevor, Glenn, Dean and Dan that I truly treasure. I can tell you that the day that I finish my Tanguay collection will be my last day in the hobby. Then, I will be able to walk away with no regrets.

If it wasn't for my 03/04 Black Diamond master set, my 05/06 Canuck UD master set, the 05/06 Ultimate Naslund patches/75, and my yearly Canuck HG project, I wouldn't even really be in the hobby anymore.

I ripped 3 cases of BD in January - thought it would get me out of the blahs... Had fun, but in the end, it didn't really rekindle any 'excitement' for me.

There is a good chance I will even be giving up future years of Canuck HGs and only concentrating on the first three things.

So, ya, I have the collecting blahs...
 
I know where your coming from, I get so excited about collecting then I get tired of it. My Bobs collection just sits there now. I know personally, I collect for fun. If I get tired of the player, I sell it and go after someone else. I started a small collection of my favorite set, 10 11 Ultimate that I go to whenever I get bored since it has a great design and has some beautiful patches.

For me I just need to change things up, like I just completed the Alex Stalock Black Diamond Rainbow and that got me fired up again.
 
I am feeling this too. I am just doing some trades to keep the motivation going. I think I am not really into collecting right now is the stress of moving and stuff like that. Once I am settled into my new place I might try and purchase a few things.

I have had bids on stuff but nothing really has caught my eye and I just forget to check the items and have lost out on a bunch of stuff.
 
For me my compulsion always outweighs my occasional indifference toward the hobby. I could never take an all out break from it for fear of missing out on a few of the cards I am looking for. So what ends up happening is my trading activity goes up and down depending on my interest level but the ebay searches continue daily.
 
i dont collect anything anymore, i kinda turn to the "business" side of things, is kinda sad but thats what it comes down to

I still crack boxes so i can cure the itch lol
 
Scott you need to move back to town.

I am going through a bit of the PC blahs but getting together at the LCS or Flea market keep the spirits alive even if we aren't buying a whole lot we get to chat and hang out

A group break/hockey game/trade night get together once in a while is nice too.

Maybe you should pick a vintage set and try to complete it. Maybe a smaller one that isn't too difficult to track down.

I would like to see more vintage action but it ain't happening here I don't think, I post when I can but you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink!
 
I get this all the time. There are only a couple Iginla cards per year I go after nowadays but I try to fill in the empty holes with collecting his base and inserts.

Does make the hobby pretty boring something though, my own fault as I've become very picky as to what I like.
 
Perhaps there is just way too much to choose from. Its hard to compare the 80's with now because of the internet and stuff but I remember how fun it was just having OPC cards, some food issues and topps and Panini sticker albums each year.

I might do what Geoff said. Pick a vintage set and slowly work at it and continue doing that from 1979-1990 (OPC). Might be fun.

I guess it goes with the territory of collecting, you taste change and if you don't have much of a supply, then you will stop collecting or cut down dramatically.

not sure how close is the closest show or shop to you but going to one of them can help you out

+1...I've been wrestling with leaving for over two years (probably more) and now with my twins on the way, that was the push I needed.

I've moved most everything that I had that wasn't considered PC and the stuff I'm keeping isn't exactly in demand (Toronto Blue Jays, Rocket Ismail, Jose Cruz Jr and Eric Lindros are the focus of what's left of my PC) which is good for me buying anything moving forward as they are inexpensive for the most part. I'm going to remain involved with the little time I'm sure I'll have, but nowhere near what it used to be.
 
I think too the internet kinda ruined everything. It was fun when the only opporunities I had to acquire new cards were card shows which were five per year, and trips to the card shop that were once every other month. Now since everything is just so damn easy to find on the internet, it's taken a lot of fun out of the hobby, most of the chase just isn't there anymore.
