I am looking for some advice about comic buying and selling.

I have been reading comics since mid 80's until know. I may have taken 4-5 yrs off in early 2000's. I mainly have Batman, Detective, Batman and Robin and some runs of 40-50 of other D.C. Characters. Just wondering if try and sell these as a lot. Best sources for figuring out the occasional key issues.

Wanted to purchase some older back issues. Mainly 1st appearance of villains in mid condition to justify price. Is this a losing money venture. Should I just buy crappy copies or super nice ones. Benefit of graded?

Thanks, Anand

Anand,

Losing venture?

Comics (key issues) have basically steadily appreciated in price for years now. It's done the complete opposite of the sports card market.

CGC is virtually a must when discussing key issues.

You can subscribe to GPA analysis (It's like $10 a month). They track confirmed sales of comics from auction houses, ebay, etc.

Check out comiclink.com. Thats a big auction house.

PM me with any questions, etc.

Over the past 3-5 years first appearances and key back issue comics have heated up. The movie industry has brought a lot of attention to comics. Condition is very important as most people avoid anything mid grade or lower unless it is a rare book. I have been amazed at how high some of the more common first appearance have climbed in price. They didn't only climb but they continue to climb and sell well. It is to the point that for the past 2 years I have stopped buying key back issues. I just can't justify spending as much as $100 on comics that were easily found in the $5-10 range just 2 years ago. I will just wait for the cycle to change again and all the new fly by night collectors to quit and start unloading all these books. I would love to see a similar thing happen with older hockey cards.
