Here's my predicament...
I just got back into collecting baseball cards last summer (have been focusing on hockey the last several years), and decided to make Ivan Rodriguez my player of choice to collect. As the player that put Detroit back on the map in baseball, and as a player with several years worth of cards to collect, I thought it was a good choice. At the National in Chicago, I made quite a start on the collection, and now have over 300 different Pudges plus a stack of GU and Patch cards (a couple are really nice).
However, over the off-season, I've suffered a change of heart. Seeing as how Pudge has made himself a bit of a bad guy around the locker room and with the fans, his (almost) certain steroid use, and the fact that he probable won't be in Detroit much longer, I'm considering dumping the collection and picking up a different player.
My quandary comes from who I should pick, if anyone, to replace Pudge as my player-collector target of choice. I'd go with Maggs, but as a former White Sox players, his jerseys and patches tend to be rather bland (gray, white, and black). I'd pick Bonderman, but his rookies are a bit out of my price range. I'd go with Verlander, but therein lies a similar problem as the Bonderman issue. I'm already chasing Shelton, but not only does he not have much to chase in terms of low-end GU and autos (which I have a blast chasing), my best friend (and long-time Tiger collector) kind of has dibs on him and I don't want to compete with him at shows for Shelton cards.
I ask you, my fellow collectors, for advice in pointing me in a non-regrettable direction...
Do I chase one of the affore mentioned players?
Do I chase a non-Tiger, and if so, who and why (what about the player would make it personally fulfilling for me, a Michigan-based Tiger fan)?
Do I continue to chase Pudge for the simple fact that, all imperfections aside, he is (almost) single-handedly responsible for bringing baseball back to Detroit? (Not to mention that playing for Texas, Florida, and Detroit means that he has some very attractive patches and GU cards out there)?
Your help in this dilemma is indubitably appreciated!!!
