Crosby out indefinitely

I don't think people are really grasping the magnitude of what we are potentially seeing here. It is very, very, very possible we have another Lindros situation on our hands. In 2 years time it's entirely possible Crosby will not be in the NHL.

Yes, that is the chicken little, glass half empty view of things but I'm thinking more and more this is what is inevitable.
 
This does not sound good. Hopefully it is a matter of everyone involved being over cautious and he comes back from this and is able to resume his career.

The real downside is that this happened in a collision between him and a teammate and did not involve a hit to the head. Even a body blow was enough to bring back symptoms.

Can't remember for sure,but I think it was Krejci who caught
him with an accidental elbow roughly 1 minute into the game
against the Bruins...
 
This is bad news, I really don't like seeing anyone in the league having to go through this.

The NHL might as well fold now !!
If they are basing their existence on ONE player in order to survive or sell the Game ,than they need a new PR scheme.

Ok so a guy is hurt,and suffering ill after affects of a seriouss condition--concussions aren't to be taken lightly. The game is not going to suffer due to one guy that isn't playing...YES I Beleive it's not fair to the other players who go out every night and give it their all and never get the headlines that the 'savior" gets.
The NHL has surrived over numerous years and have had good/great players retire and and of course another player comes along to attract attention to their team.
Why is it that everytime this guy can't play,there are "oh No what are we going to do?" type mentality?
Enjoy the OTHER players that can play and are on the ice--send the Kid a get well card or that sucks for you that you got hurt...give the other players the due they deserve.

BTW I do wish him well as I have had numerous concussions as well,it's no fun.
 
The fact his career could be shortened by a cheap shot in the Heritage Classic game is hard to take. Hockey history may record this single act may have done more to deprive the game of hockey than any other. I hope Dave Steckel is proud of himself.....
 
Well hopefully it's what others are saying and only precautionary. I hate to see any young player bow out early in a career. NHL will be fine though. There will always be another superstar right around the corner bummer for the here and now though!
 
VintageHky - Like it or not Crosby is the face of the NHL. Does it mean that the league revolves around him... no. Does it mean that the league will get no love with him out - no.

BUT... if you want to grow the visibility of the game of hockey to non-fans, they need some to identify wtih. And that player needs to be a superstar and needs to win championships. Not every year - but needs to be there. Nothing but good comes from growing the game to new markets and new viewership. Every sport that rocketed into prominence had that player or couple of players - to create the buzz.

Baseball had Sosa/McGWIRE home run race that saved it from the strike.
Football had Americas team and then it had the 49'ers and then it had Brady.
Basketball had Bird/Magic abd when that died down along came Jordan.

Hockey needs to take that step forward - and right now Crosby was the player that transcended countries. I realize that some want to go back to the good old days of the Original 6 - but more of us want others to see hockey the way that we do - the fastest game on earth, with the best players both on the ice and off.
 
Not to downplay this, but is this what it's going to be like everytime he gets the flu? How about a run-of-the-mill headache? How can one even tell the difference between those and "concussion-related symptoms"? At what point does sitting out for precautionary reasons become so common that you may as well call it a career?
 
The best thing for the Pens to do now is to move on without anticipation of Crosby returning and build their team accordingly. That would start with moving Paul Martin and his 5 million dollar contract and picking up another forward for the same amount of coin. Simon Despres is more than capable of taking Martin's place as is Lovejoy. Also, this should be the time to stick Tangradi on the 2nd line and tell him it's now or never.

I've had the same feeling ever since he missed the second half of last season. As a Crosby fan and fellow Nova Scotian I was excited to see him back but in the back of my mind I was thinking "now how long until he's out again?"

I think these days we know more about treating concussions so one of two things will happen. Either they will cautiously treat Crosby and allow him to have an on-again-off-again career as long as possible, or they will recommend retirement before even more damage is done. Lindros was basically thrown into the fire over and over again and suffered for it. I truly believe Crosby will have the sense to retire before its too late. It would be a shame to see it happen but I also think its only a matter of time.
 
Please bring back the old soft shoulder and elbow gear. Problem solved.

Noone wants to hurt their own elbows and shoulders if they don't protect too much. It would also slow thing down a bit on the ice cause player would like to stay healthy themselves.

Hockey already had that player. His name was Gretzky. Hockey will never be the other 3 sports in terms of popularity. If you want a sport to become popular you need more than just stars; you needs youth playing the game. That is where hockey lags behind the other sports. It is just too darn expensive for masses of kids to start playing.
 
Does anyone know if the NHLPA is doing anything to improve equipment for preventing concussions? As far as better helmets possibly? Also, even though it would look absurd, how about instituting facemasks as part of the head gear? Football players wear them and as far as game speed goes, football is a slower sport and it seems to me there are a lot less concussions in football than there are in hockey.

I'm not sure facemasks would reduce concussions as it's not so much pucks or sticks to the face causing head trauma. Football helmets have more padding and conform more closely to the head. Plus they use the chinstrap as it is intended, not dangling halfway down the neck like in hockey. The head just bounces around in side the helmet when not properly worn.

Softer pads is a good start, but players are growing stronger and skating faster than ever and collisions are still going to cause significant injury.

HA good luck with that. There is no chance you could get an NHL player to wear a full cage/visor.
