Crosby suffers a serious injury which questions his future (think Lindros). Ovy has a sub par year especially for his standards. The Caps get bumped early, Russia is a major let down in the Olympics and Worlds. What do this mean for these 2 players who usually lead our great hobby?

While I think they will remain popular I think the prices for them will drop. I would expect any recent cards and stuff about to come out to remain cool until next seasons.

So what are your thoughts?
 
Disagree. Their stuff will remain steady or rise.

The two biggest names in the hobby will not see a decrease in popularity.

And popularity is what drives the hobby
 
Seems to be cooled off so far. Their Young gun rookies are selling for the lowest I have ever seen them available for, same with Ultra and BD rookies. They don't seem to be selling on ebay just sitting in peoples stores. Malkin is another guy that seems to have hit a spot with collectors. His stuff has dropped as well. My son who is 10 loves them both and we have been buying some now for way lower then even 6 months ago. I hope it continues as they are certainly more affordable.

With so many other stars performing well and getting interest I think collectors are leaning more on them now (Stamkos for example).

I've seen a couple of Crosby collectors start to sell off their stuff. They're worried. Perhaps with very good reason. Of course, if Sid comes back 100% next season and goes on the same tear that he was on prior to the concussion, the days of "cheap" Crosby autos & such will be a thing of the past.
 
card collectors are so fickle. go on a bad streak for a month and prices drop sharply, for anyone. Go on a decent run and prices shoot up.
 
Card value depends on many things. Generally, it's a supply and demand world. But there are exceptions. The "what have you done for me lately" rule produces sharp increases/decreases in a player's card value based on how well/poorly the player has performed over the course of a few weeks (or even up to a year). You cannot take away what a player has accomplished. For example, the gold medals, Stanley Cup, and other trophies that Sidney Crosby has won will keep his cards in high demand (even if he were to retire tomorrow!). I have seen no drop in value in any of Sydney Crosby's high end cards. I've actually seen some of his cards go up in value since he got injured. The supply just isn't there to meet the demand for certain of his cards. Collectors are shelling out big bucks for all that this guy has accomplished already in his career, regardless of what the future holds. I would expect the lower end cards to go down in value (as with any player) simply because there are far too many to go around. As for Ovechkin, he still needs to prove himself. He is going to need a lot more than being in the top 10 in NHL scoring each year to keep the value up on his cards. I think another sub-par year for Ovechkin next season (for example, 35g and 50a and an early playoff exit) will result in his value going down by at least 25% of what it is at right now. Compared to Crosby he just doesn't have the records and hardware to keep his value high long term while performing as a star (but not a superstar).
 
Crosby has always been and will always be high. I've seen a step back in Ovechkin interest, but that will change when he nets 60 this year again.
 
as an ovechkin collector any cards numbered to /25 or less are still selling well (hard core collectors), anything above that you can basically get for a couple bucks if you wait a little bit. As an example a quad jersey card from 10-11 OPC which isn't even numbered just finished at 60 with shipping. I have no idea about Crosby.
 
I do hope that Crosby card prices do drop a bit, that means I can get more of them :) but don't expect it to last too long. I think once next season starts and he picks up where he left off before his injury, you will see that his prices will start to climb.
 
It's about as good a time to buy either right now when it comes to low to mid end cards. But as an Ovie collector too, I have seen some premium prices paid out for his SP autos/gu stuff.

But in the long run Crosby's cards will still hold their value given what he's already accomplished imo.
 
I think their RC year stuff, and CUP stuff (Limited Logos, etc) will continue to sell high, but I can see their mid-end stuff taking a little bit of a drop
 
They'll more than likely sit near the high's of a particular product but with the way the hobby is moving, just how high the product ceiling is remains the question.
 
Crosby's cards are at the lowest I've seen. Anything of his that is "high-end and low numbered" will always retain it's value. Having said that it is also a select few that can afford such cards. People are fickle and seem to worry too much. The kid was made to sit! They are trying to make a point about these types of head shots. The best way to do it is have your poster boy out because of it.

Crosby has taken a bashing ever since he hit the NHL, his critics never let up. That is good, why? It's simple, Crosby thrives on challenging himself to improve. He tackles what is thrown at him and performs. My money is if he wanted to hit the ice and it was totally up to him he would have.

Ovy, ya he's Russian need I say more?
