Crosby vs. McDavid

The safe money is on Crosby. He's proven himself and has the hardware to back it up. And he can only add to that list going forward. Mcdavid's prices are currently based on him becoming Crosby and accomplishing what Crosby has to date. Maybe that will happen, maybe it won't. Or maybe he ends doing better than Crosby.

If you're buying McDavid expecting his cards to double in value then you're going to be disappointed no matter how long you wait. His current value is just too high for that to happen. It's essentially on par with Crosby and McDavid hasn't accomplished anything at the NHL level yet. He basically has to accomplish what Crosby has just to maintain his current value. That's setting the bar pretty high. With that said if you're OK taking a risk and want to cheer on the best up and coming player in the league with his prime years still ahead of him I'd go with McDavid.

Well said and I totally agree.

Similar to the Efficient Market Hypothesis, values are already reflecting what the market thinks Connor will become, and that is Sidney Crosby.

Did the same thing not apply to Crosby? I bought a case back in 2005 and pulled three Crosbys. Those paid for the case and the rest was gravy.

I think even more telling was the math you did in another thread outlining how many 9.5 Crosby YGs there were in eleven years vs how many McDavids there were in one.

The difference in 2005 is that there was no precedent to compare it to and this year with McDavid the precedent is Crosby.

Yeah totally agree that the numbers I outlined regarding the amount of BGS 9.5's and PSA 10's of both Crosby and McDavid is more telling in that the supply of McDavid's is already much greater than those of Crosby so from a supply and demand perspective, Crosby is the better "investment". Not too mention, as has been by others above, that his accomplishments are what McDavid has to equal to have the same long-term value as Crosby.

And for fun, here are the updated numbers:

Crosby PSA 10's - 407
McDavid PSA 10's - 524

Crosby BGS 9.5's - 1519
McDavid BGS 9.5's - 3081

If you like to gamble go McD. Sid is the king right now and it may stay that way.
But if,and thats a big IF Connor surpasses all of Sid's accomplishments just think of the value in the future.

So if the "big" actualizes, and his demand goes up, there will be more than enough supply to satisfy, possibly resulting in the value being on par with Sid.
