I sold some cards to a Canadian buyer and now he sends me a picture of the damaged envelope and says all he got was the envelope and no cards. :|

A part of me says just refund the guy and forget it. But another part of me is questioning this guys honesty.

What do you think?

Here is what he sent me:

It could very well be legit. I sent out a card a few weeks back to somone in Ontario and I was told that if I hadnt put the card in a magnetic holder it would have been totalled. They atleast got the card in perfect condition but it does seem to be happening a bit more now on the Canadian side. I would maybe talk to him about it. He obviously sees that you sent it to him so maybe he only wants a partial refund. Good luck with it though.

How much are we talking? Under $15, pay it and chalk it up to experience. I take photos of all stuff shipped out now before the PO. This seems to be more of a problem crossing the border. I do see with Canadian shippers sometimes pack them thinner so they travel as a card. This costs less, but these are automated machines and I have a feeling its these that are crunching things.

It looks like he has the bag that it would have been sent to him in via Canada Post at the bottom of the pic. If an item gets damaged, they'll toss it in a plastic bag with a stupid form apology letter. I don't know why they even waste their time sending empty envelopes like that, but they do.

I don't know what I'd do in that situation. It's obvious that it was mishandled by the PO. I have big issues with people who try to take advantage of that. Just seems greasy to me. Why would he go after you for something that is quite obviously not your fault?

Maybe put the ball back in his court. Ask him whether or not he's taken the issue up with the PO, and what his expectations are.

I have had the same thing happen to me from a US seller. The kicker is that I dealt with the guy previously, and he was a great trader, thus I didn't blame it on him, but ultimately chalked it up to a post office problem. He made good on the deal, but I felt bad being the receiver of the package and having to give the bad news....because as a receiver, stereotypically, the seller will say he got "screwed" on the deal, which would not be the case.

It could very well be fault of the post office, so who knows. Hopefully this doesn't sway you from shipping to Canada as I'm sure most of us cdn members here on H.I. have bought from you many times.

Hope it works out in the end! :)

Did the buyer ask for a refund up front? Or just ask you what you can do to help.

I would contact the post office to see what they can do.

You could split the costs - refund half.

Whatever happens, I would keep the lines of communication open. These things do legitimately happen.

Hopefully you can come to an agreeable conclusion.
