He should have been fired the day after this terrible trade. The Phaneuf haters can whine and chew all they want. Toronto won big with this trade in my opinion.
I guess all the bs Sutter tried to feed the Calgary Herald about Dion didnt work either. :rolleyes:
This is a sad end to his GM stint. So much damage to this proud franchise, Flames fans deserved better......

Ok, you're in love with Phaneuf, we all get it already. But neither side involved in that deal has come out on top. Both teams are sucking slough water, so DP isn't the savior you keep making him out to be.
And Calgary should have been smart and left him as a coach only, he did an ok job there, but as soon as he was left to the decision making, the ball started downhill. Too many 4th line/over the hill players expected to be top line guys all of a sudden were brought in at the expense of the younger developing players, and the coaching staff, wow. When Keenan was brought in, that should have set off all kinds of red flags to the ownership. But, at least now they are trying to right things. Good luck to them!

Im a fan, yes. Many people on the boards are fans of male NHL players. But dont be worried or alarmed, just because we are "fans" doesnt mean we are "in love"......:laugh::laugh:

Lets keep this clean. Not many would argue that the Leafs and Flames are on level ground with each other in their respective rebuilding process's. Considering the Flames havent even started yet......until today.
IMO team points today isnt the only measuring stick of this rebuilding process. Lets see where these two teams end up in the next year or two.....or three.

Ken King is nothing but an empty suit who has nothing, of any knowledge of hockey whatsoever on the NHL level. He's nothing but a money man who did a great job filling the place and making money for the team, but nothing more.

Kinda fitting when he said last spring that the only way Darryl Sutter goes was if he were to be fired. Looks like a move more suited to trying to keep one's job than anything.

From the lay of the land in Calgary - the only person who might come in at the top to take over would be Bob Nicholson from Hockey Canada. But even then, who really wants to inherit this mess? Calgary is much like Toronto, in that it won't stand for a rebuild in the big picture - especially with many fans having a sense of entitlement that a Conference Finals appearance was always a given - ever since the miracle run in '04.

Bottom line, there is little hope for the future for the Flames at this point. The cupboard is pretty bare in the system, and building back through the draft will be difficult without 2nd and 3rd round picks this year. Add the dozen or so No Trade Clauses on the current roster, how in the world is there going to be a rebuild especially with more than a few albatrosses for contracts?
 
Right now Calgary is in the exact same position Toronto was in 5 years ago. An almost playoff team with a bunch of no trades that are going to be very hard to move. Calgary needs to learn from the mistakes Toronto made and rebuild this the right way. Hopefully, for Calgary fans, whomever takes over will do it properly and not be in the position we are in 5 years from now.

Keenan brought that team to the playoffs in 2 consecutive years. They got rid of him, and missed the playoffs.

I honestly believe the downfall of Calgary was signing Bouwmeester. Things went downhill from there.
 
And he also lost in the first round in both of those years. And a record of 88-60-16, while a winning one, just shows how average the team had already become. Plus they had made the playoffs the previous 3 seasons too, and he had nothing to do with that.
He was a bad coach to bring in. I still don't think either that Playfair got the shot he deserved.
Out of all the current situation though, I really hope that they find a way to keep Iginla around, at least for a while yet anyhow. I know some people think he's overpaid and underachieving right now too, but he can't do it all by himself either. He's been the face of the franchise for so long now, tough to see the team without him, but hard to say if he will be staying.

I think the writing was on the wall, Calgary needed a change. Questionable trades, bad signings, there were more bad decisions then good ones. IMO this is a good thing for Flames fans.
 
It's going to be a sad day in my house when Iginla gets traded! I hope it at least happens next year so Iginla has a chance of scoring #500 in a Flames jersey.
