Daugavins' controversial spinorama

I didn't like it. I can understand his thoughts somewhat, as he was successful in the minors, but come on. This is the NHL, you're facing on of it's best goalies in Rask, and you have the oppurtunity to greatly contribute to your team winning. I personally didn't approve.
 
He was inches away from scoring. If it would have went in, it would've been front page news (if it isn't already).

I have no doubt the coaches knew what was coming when they put him in there.

No problem with it here. How many times have you seen guys play it safe and either miss the net, or lose the puck? Rask made a great save. Just because it was flashy, doesnt mean it wasnt effective.

I believe the problem people have with the attempt is that is was Daugavins'. If it was Giroux, Crosby, Nash, Iginla, etc... it wouldnt be an issue. Fans have issues when the unknown players try to do something flashy.

Shawn Thornton didnt have a problem with it.

yea, it just didnt seem like that shot was going to give him a better chance of scoring then say and wrist shot or more skilled deke. I'll say this tho, pretty damn gutsy. i wouldnt have done it.
 
I hate the shootout almost as much as I hate 3 point games. Having said that, I have no problems with what Kaspars tried to do. If the NHL wants that kind of flash (and the skills comeptition speaks volumes that they do) then let the players do it all the time.
 
I hate shootouts but if they are going to do it, I am all for all the tricks in the book. I liked it. Was pretty cool
 
we call that the ringette move. we usually do it during warm-ups or if we are goofing around but not sure if we would do it with the game at stake.
 
I liked the creativity but chances of scoring are slim at best. Right off the bat the goalie knows you are deking rather than shooting. Then it's just a matter of blocking the bottom of the net. Shooter has nowhere else to go.
 
Whats the big deal about what he did? Its not like he's the 1st to do the "spin-o-rama" in the shotout.
A bunch of players have actually scored on them...(not all of them just a small portion)

As of right now that is the case - but next time he comes in he can make a fake carrying the puck in the same way, pull back and stickhandle and roof one - there are actually a lot of options coming out of this thing that can trick a goalie up.

Thumbs up - love to see the creativity - although I'm pretty sure Phil Bourque tried to pull off a similar move with a breakaway years ago.

I was at the game last night, and couldn't believe he was going to try that. My take on it, I didn't like it, BUT, it was entertaining, which is exactly what the shootout is meant to be - Entertainment for the fans. It got fans out of their seats as soon as he started.

Kaspars tried something he felt was his best chance to score doing, ultimately he was stopped, but it came closer than Alfredsson, and Silfverberg who tried rather "standard" shootout moves and were stopped or missed the net.

Im all for the creativity and showmanship on this. If this was Datsyuk would we be having this same conversation????

The NHL wants an entertaining product to put out on the ice so why not encourage this, and when a goalie like Rask makes a great save on the play its just as good if not better. To me a goal is a goal, whether its a slap shot, wrist show, back hand....you name it (just as long as it doesnt go through the side of the net via Brett Hull). Your out there to try and win the game and what he did was try and win, with the spin'orama.

The NHL wants this....make it exciting...no more ties after a 5min OT. I like the format this way (though my Flyers are terrible at shootouts), with the Sudden Death OT in the Playoffs it works out great!

Kudos for the attempt....I want to see more creativity.

It's a shootout, creativity like this often makes the goalie lose his focus more than a traditional skate'n'shoot or 1,2,3 deke.

And those saying Rask 'knew' it was going to be on the ice... He doesn't know it until the shot it taken, it takes a split second to pull the stick back a tad and roof it. That is a much harder save than Rask is being given credit for.

Ditto. Shootout is a big gimmick. Might as well pull these stunts.
