Just sold for $670 CAN on eBay, wow! A fool and his money just parted ways lol. No way that card increases in value like a Gretzky RC, Sid YG, Ovi YG, etc. I’d take 3 Auston YGs over that card personally.

Honestly I think the top end of this rookie class is incredibly overpriced. Two defenseman, who are having good seasons and Jack Hughes, who needed two or three seasons in the NCAA to actually prepare to play center in the NHL.

Those playing top dollar for Makar and the Hughes brothers should expect to lose some value in the future.

I have been thinking the same thing. When is the last time a defenseman commanded 3 bills for an SPA FW. Never. I’d be trading those two for a Hughes, Oloffsson, Kubalik and Glass. You could probably get all 4!

Nick Suzuki is selling for good money too. Suzuki is good, but I would take 2 Gallagher Ultimate RCs /99 over a Suzuki FWA any day of the week.

Defenseman? How many forwards kept up their value? Remember when Duchene was hot? Landeskog? Nugent Hopkins? Etc. Most rookies are going to go down in value. If anything I like Makar holding his value more than Hughes because his team is just so much more explosive.

I collect high gloss Young Guns and don't understand this thread at all. The vast majority of cards will decrease in value and shouldn't be treated as an investment: you should simply buy the cards you like and can afford - that is the only financially responsible way to collect. I personally treat every penny I spent on cards as a 100% loss. Have you seen other high gloss prices? Makar and Pettersson went for USD 2k recently. Yes, Ayres buyer is likely to loose USD 500, but Makar and Pettersson's buyers are likely to loose well over USD 1k: you can get high gloss young guns of players like Stamkos or Malkin for way less than USD 1k. What are the chances that Makar and Pettersson will be that good? At first glance, Crosby might sound like a safer bet, but his high gloss Young Guns just went for USD 20k: that is not a S&P500 ETF, there are very few people who are willing to pay that amount for a non-auto non-mem hockey card, so the future growth is dubious.

Someone valued it enough to want to have it in their collection - who's to say who's right and who's wrong. What does it matter if you don't value it as much? When it comes to collecting, what should rule #1 be?

COLLECT WHAT YOU WANT

When has a modern defenseman ever held value in the hobby? Bourque, Leetch, Coffey, Lidstrom, Pronger, Neidermeyer, Subban, Weber, Green, Karlsson, Burns, etc all never truly held top value in the hobby.

Orr is probably the only guy that truly holds super star level value and that is because of scarcity.

hockey collectors: our product yield very little in return and most cards hold little value. why can't we sell our stuff for prices a fraction close to baseball and basketball?

also hockey collectors: cards are too expensive now. can't afford anything.

Exactly! Seems like it's only good news if *I* profit from it. :comp:

One dimensional perspective right here. You're only thinking of the monetary aspect of the card while the buyer could be valuing it by what the card represents. What if the buyer is a kidney transplant survivor or someone waiting for one? The card could easily serve as a beacon of hope to someone in the hobby. Or maybe it's someone who loves an underdog story and the truly impossible nature of what Ayres accomplished?

Just to add, even if it was purely from a investment standpoint there would be an argument that it's value could increase if a tv series or even feature film was made based on his historic game. It happened to Michael Oher's cards after The Blind Side came out. And no, I do not own a single Ayres card, but this is supposed to be a hobby and we all collect for our own personal reasons.

Yeah, I don't find it as a silly buy at all. The person who purchased that Ayres High Gloss for their collection paid what it was worth on the secondary market, which is a lot of money right now (Like it or not, it's a Hot card that has a lot of interest).

They now are getting a card they really wanted for their collection, and that is beyond awesome.

If you're looking at cards from a strict investment point of view, then I guess a lot of us are fools for buying anything for our collections, haha.

Who cares if you would rather have 3 Matthews Young Guns over this? Who cares what someone else pays? Collect what you want and worry less about others? It's a hobby after all.. My opinion, but what a dumb thread...

This.

If someone wants to pay $600+ for a card I don’t want? By all means :)
