deceptive "Patch" vs. "Jersey" labeling

It seems like disproportionately, I'm seeing 08 SPx rookie jersey and Winning Combos Spectrum cards mislabeled as patches. I'm having trouble determining if I view this as ignorance or deception.

Given the definition of the term "patch" I took off of google, a patch is "a piece of cloth used as decoration or to mend or cover a hole". Technically, does this even make them incorrect to call a jersey swatch a patch?

I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

It happens. Sellers always try to attract more attention to their auctions like guys who list a Ryan Whitney card and have to put Crosby in the title. Or those that list Ultimate cards and put Cup in the title.

You can report keyword spamming to eBay. They do have policies against that much.

The SPx cards can be confusing since they made the Spectrums thick cards like patches.

I can extend the benefit of the doubt there.

I have a lot of more important issues with ebay policies and sellers rather than how they incorrectly title their auctions.

it annoys me when they put jersey patch...I bid on a card that I thought was a patch, but it was just a jersey card, I never would have bought it if I realized that, the scan was crappy so I couldn't tell.

This same thing happened to me recently, but I had a suspicion that it might have just been a jersey card.

Buyer beware, I guess.

It's just a way for seller's to increase their hits during the search process, IMO also.

But does come down to the, buyer beware in the long run. Make sure that you're bidding on what you really want. Cause a well informed buyer is a happy buyer in the end. :beer:

I would tend to think this is more than keyword spamming. As a seller, wouldn't you be opening yourself up to liability, a Paypal dispute, bad feedback, or at very least - a low DSR?

This is why I mentioned that we as buyer's have to make sure that we know what we are buying.. As for the unscrupulous that might choose to take advantage of the 'Item received not as listed'.... Then in my option the seller who has in essence done a keyword spam has opened himself up for it. I don't condone this type of behaviour from a buyer. But there are buyer's that might.

I know the SELLER does it a lot to attract more hits. As long as they have a nice scan of the card, I can see that it is NOT a patch and bid accordingly. It's the SELLERS that list it as a patch and have no scan, purposely trying to deceive...then I get ticked. But I can see a non-collector being led astray and scammed because they just aren't knowledgable enough about cards and bid thinking it is a patch.

Case in point...a few years ago, I bid on a Modano BAP Ultimate Patch card. Seller didn't list serial number, or a scan, and wouldn't reply to notes. I won the card and sent payment. When I got the card, it was a Modano stick card with some writing on the stick piece. I sent an eBay note to the guy and said that his description said PATCH, not STICK. He then responded with "It is a patch of stick...you got what was advertised." He wouldn't take card back or refund money...I saw he was doing this with regular jersey cards, too (some serial numbers gave him away)....so reported him to eBay. He was booted and never saw him on since.

Like Curt said, the seller has a picture. One would need some good glasses if they can't tell that's not a patch. It's irritating, but not a very big deal to me.

Yeah good point. Same with me personally, it isn't a big deal cause most things a person can catch. For some as well I think a broader knowledge of a product may help. I can say in all my years of dealing and buying hundreds of memorabilia cards I have never once been burned by a misleading jersey/patch listing. Unfortunatly I too have noticed an increase in the number of "Ignorant" Sellers over the past couple of years.

On a little different note I DO LIKE THAT TYPE OF LISTING in football because a lot of Donruss/Playoff product does not have a patch designation on a blatently clear cut piece of Patch when in fact they just call it a jersey card still. It happened on a Carson Palmer piece I got last year and another player that escapes me now.

People just have to be honest and straight forward. Too many times greed takes over and that is sad. I mean if you get a Ryan Whitney this time guess what you'll probably score good somewhere down the road. We all collect for different reasons and some that do to make a buck sure try to play yah when the going is rough. Everything evens out just be good.
