Devils sign Schneider to extension

I think 6 million seems about right for a young stud goalie. Again I don't think any man is worth 6 mil a season to play a sport but I would think that's about the right price for him.

In one word - Yes There is no doubt in my mind that Ryan Miller is the better choice at that rate.

In addition, there is a BIG difference in a 6M per season contract for 3 years versus a 7 year 6M per season contract.

I agree with Barrie and would've like to keep Schneider instead but that ship has sailed. However, to be correct, it's 6M for 3 years compared to 6M for 7 years AFTER this upcoming season.

However, I'd prefer to take my chances with the younger goalie (Cory) and get his 29/30/31/32/33/34 and 35 age seasons at $6M (28 is on old Canuck contract) compared to the 34/35 and 36 seasons from the older goalie for the same.

Younger and also doesn't have the wear and tear from playing 60+ games each season yet.

Of course, that can also be looked at as a negative since you can't be sure how he'll handle that workload yet.
 
Miller tanked with St. Louis who were arguably Stanley Cup contenders before he crapped the bed.

He'll probably look even worse on that Canucks squad.
 
Schneider has shown that he can play in the NHL, and has put up some great numbers. But still the sample size is a little small. 143 NHL games. While $6M isn't totally out of line, the term is what has me a bit concerned. That's a pretty big commitment to a player that isn't already a "star" player. And the contract ends when Schneider is 36.

Also, just looking at the team, I'm just not sure what the team direction is. Just make the playoffs and hopefully get lucky? 3 years from now, the only players under contract are Schneider, Clowe, Cammalleri, Zajac and Henrique, and only Matteau, Merrill, Larsson, and Gelinas (maybe Boucher?) as RFAs/ELC. Not exactly a team that I would pencil in as perennial playoff team, let alone a Cup contender.

Not sure how he crapped the bed exactly. St. Louis played Chicago, which is a pretty damn good team the last time I checked.

If you take out the 6th game, Miller's SV% was .911, and his GAA was approx. 2.33.

Game 3 was 2-0, with an ENG, so Crawford shut out the Blues.

Games 4 and 5 both went to OT. So a coin toss.

Game 6 was tied 1-1 going into the 3rd. Hawks get an early PP goal by Toews. Hawks get a quick one after on a breakaway by Sharp, which would have been a penalty shot anyway. Bad shot selection by the St. Louis Dman which led to the breakaway. The goals scored by the Hawks weren't softies from centre ice. Screens, deflections, 2 on 1, breakaways, etc. There were some misplays by the Blues defense and forwards too. The team crap the bed.

Plus if you take out the 3rd period of game 6, Miller's SV% was still .911. One bad period and it drops the SV% to .897 for the series.

Now his regular 19 games with St. Louis was a bit mediocre 2.47 GAA and .903 SV%, and he did let in some softies then. But when it mattered, it seemed like Miller did play pretty well.


Now the Canucks aren't the Blues, and Miller may not look as good b/c the team in front of him isn't as good, but I don't believe that Miller's just a "regular" goalie now and that he's done. I'm sure it will take some time for Miller and the D to figure each other out. Plus a new coach, so I fully expect some growing pains. Which I don't mind. I wanted Canucks to tank for McDavid/Eichel, but they went out and signed a bunch of guys...oh well.
 
I think by the middle to end of these contracts Miller won't be the better goalie, not convinced he is even today. Miller has seem his best days, he is still good but his age is showing. I think this is a good signing for the Devils.
 
Schneider has the best sv% among goalies since 2010. His GAA the last 4 years is 2.05 over 125 starts. His numbers have remained constant with an increased workload over each of the last 4 seasons. The guy is the real deal and doesn't have a lot of mileage on his body. Great signing.

So 3 years from now, 9 players (close to half of the assumed 20 man lineup) will be under contract. What's the problem?

They have one of the best groups of defensive prospects heading forward. Larsson and Merrill are both very good young two-way guys. Gelinas very well could hit 40+ points as early as next season. Severson was a 60 point D-man in the WHL and is knocking on the door and Santini was one of the NCAA's best shutdown D-men as a freshman. On top of that, most Devil fans anticipate an Andy Greene extension soon, and he's been the anchor of the Devils defense the last 5 seasons (which has ranked 6th, 13th, 9th, 9th, and 1st over that span despite underwhelming goaltending outside of Schneider last year and Brodeur in 2009.) That's their direction.

Well, they just did that three years ago. Though that was with Kovalchuk and Parise. They don't have those star players currently on the roster (all due respect to Jagr) but I do like their depth, although they have a number of players that you can pencil in for some missed time already.

It's an interesting build as they've got a goalie in his prime, a young defense core on the way and an older forward group outside of Henrique. They're a playoff contender (they weren't far from contention last year, and they're rated very high in CORSI if you put any stock into that. Plus the better goalie will be playing full-time and they can't lose 13 shootouts again... can they??), and then yeah, you just hope that things bounce your way in the playoffs. You can only add the players that become available to you. If things look good, Lou isn't afraid to add a star - Andreychuk, Gilmour, Kovalchuk and Mogilny all come to mind as trade deadline acquisitions.

I'm not sure what happens a couple of years down the line after Elias & Jagr are gone. Their system isn't very good in terms of scorers and who knows what you'll get out of Matteau and Boucher. But you can only see how things look in the present, and I'm looking forward to the 2014-15 season!

I don't know how big of an impact he will have. Sure a healthy body is always good to have, but he's a year older, was only on pace for 50 points. Pretty steep for almost $5M cap hit, and 4 more years, and who is the #2 LW. I like Cammalleri way more than I like Clowe.
 
Having both in the lineup will help. Healthy Clowe can add 20 goals and 50 points as well as a big strong body in front of the net and he will hold other teams accountable. They are a better team this year and they just missed the playoffs last year.

Wow, I didn't expect that signing to create this much traction with the devils so unpopular in general!...

Watching cory last year was a treat, and I believe that if he had any margin of goal support, the devils would have been a playoff team and a contender in the east. He has a great attitude and covers his angles about as well as anyone in the game.

I think the devils took some strides in the right direction this offseason beginning with the Cammalleri signing on July 1st... The contracts may be at high values, but management has acknowledged that in this day and age, you have to pay the price. They are a team that spends to the cap, so it is obvious that any holes in the roster three years from now are going to be filled.

The contract secures one of the best goalies in the league over the past few years through the prime of his career, and helps the devils move on from brodeur in an exciting way - I am so glad they have avoided any kind of Philadelphia style goalie carousel.
 
lol. I personally don't have any hate on for NJ. Loved them for decades b/c of Brodeur.

Just my critical analysis of where teams are headed, IMO. And it's just my opinion. But if people are open to discussion, I'll give more of my thoughts. I try to be as unbiased in my assessments.

I like Schneider a lot. He could prove to be worth every cent, but he needs a team in front of him. NJ could be a playoff team next year, but I don't think they're a cup contender, and aren't super close to being one. As I mentioned, they could get lucky and go on a deep run like the Habs this year, but I think they'll just keep falling short in the playoffs and keep the fans hungry for more.
