Do 1/1's Count For Player Collections?

Hi all,

What is the consensus on 1/1's for player collection totals? Do they count towards the overall count?

Player has 10 x regular cards and 10 x 1/1's. You collect the 10 regular cards so are you at 100% or 50%?

I say you are at 100%.

It's your choice really. Either count the 1/1's or don't

I like having 2 percentages, one with 1/1's and one with out

When I was a player collector, I used to cheat a bit. I would count the ones that I had for me, but didn't count the ones I did not have against me. They were little added bonuses to my collection for me. If I got them, awesome. If I didn't, oh well.

I count them in my total. I have over 80% of all John Klingberg cards from UD. that includes the 1/1s

I agree with either way. But I know I won't have all the 1/1s, so as long as I get all the non 1/1s, it's a win. But my competitive nature makes me want them all. haha

I've never been concerned about the percentage with 1/1s. Never going to get them all.

To each their own but I am a nay, (as you can see in my signature, which probably needs updated) way to many of the. I was at 47 Ryan 1/1's at one point before I realized how silly that chase was

I second this. One will never obtain all 1 of 1's if there's more than 1.
No sense putting up with the frustration.

I don't collect them, there are too many cards designated as 1/1's with too many asterisks as to what qualifies them. IMHO 1 of 1's have become far too watered down to have any value any more.

If one ends up in my collection its because I like the card, not because it's the 1 of 1 parallel/variant/stamped/different foil colour/show card/diamond club card/press plate/etc/etc/etc/etc/etc

I may be a little different on this one. I DO count 1/1's towards the player collection but I DO NOT count cards with other players. ie a Cup Duo enshrinements with Hall and Tavares would not be in my collection. I am in the process of trying to count up the Hall 1/1's

I would say it is a mixed bag and will depend on how you define your collection.

If the goal is to get all cards created, like a rainbow, from the set, then maybe, and only if you can afford it. It essentially comes to financial means. For instance, Topps Gold Label produced 3 years, of which 2 had the gold, black, red tier system for each player. Each had classes 1, 2, & 3. Each had 1/1’s for each color and tier. That essentially means that there are 9!!! 9 printed 1/1’s for each player! Thinking that there are 9 cards, alone, to chase, of which the reds were /100, /50, /25, it made it difficult to obtain the base version let alone get a single 1/1 of that player. So, in this case, you may believe that the 1/1’s will be bonus, and a slow collection would be best but essentially the goal may never be met.

This idea goes for other current sets: Artifacts, OPC platinum are the ones that stand out as having a base card paralleled to 1/1.

Special
Inserts, such as printing plates, should not be included as they are not obtained through the set on most basis. UD & OPC/OPC Plat have been known to toss plates into packs. When it comes to rc plates, THE CUP usually has the sets from the other set (UD, The CUP, SPx, SPa) and getting these, if you want to include these, should be seen as bonus. Claim victory once a plate Quincy has been obtained!!

All in all…going to include 1/1’s, you will be in the same boat as people trying to create quincy’s and some sets…the card that you need may never appear…ever.

I have been collecting for 30 years. I have 3 cards that could be part of someone’s collection: Will Carrier ITG patch (print run of 8, I believe someone has the other 7), Erik Brannstrom Artifacts 1/1 patch/tag/auto (pulled from box, but hits a goal for me from the set), and Patrick Roy SPGU Fight Strap /3 (never seen another).

Once you complete something, it may be hard to sell. The Crosby Fight Strap set from the same year as my Roy, has been attempted to sell as a set and is currently trying to be sold separately. And yes, that is a hella feat in the 1st place!

I also like having 2 percentages, one with 1/1's and one without. There are over 1000 Iginla 1/1 cards, it would be financially irresponsible of me to go after them all, and many of them would not even be available. So for me, the 76.2% of all cards excluding 1/1 cards is the more important figure. I have classified myself as a completionist in the past, but if I am realistic I agree with quincy's donut analogy.

I don't count 1/1's towards my total completion count, but will try to get as many as I can. I nice bonus for sure!

My 2 cents on the subject…
My wantlist has every card made, even the 1/1s.
However, I have learned to accept having one of the four printing plates is a nice compromise.
