Do you ever feel ashamed of your hobby?

I'm 25 and am not ashamed of my hobby. My girlfriend "hates" it but she's one who will open packs from time to time. When I was busting football she'd want 1/2 the box :) However, I think she may be embarrassed when friends visit as I have a few of my cards of display (~10) and I don't think her friends are as understanding as she is ... :)
My close friends either don't care or show very little interest - which I don't care about because I still show them my good hits when I hit. If I am excited about it and you're visiting you can take 30 seconds to hear about it whether you're excited about it not. Sometimes they (and my girlfriend) will even fake excitement, which is nice sometimes...haha :) I only know one other collector in town by name (fellow boardie Pike0208) and one other by appearance from bumping into him, so i have to subject someone to card talk from time to time :)

I "re-entered" the hobby about a year ago at the age of 20. I was bored last summer and just decided to search eBay for some of the cards I used to collect to see what was going on in the hobby. Well, it didn't take long to get addicted again. I certainly feel a little bit self-conscious about it, just because none of my friends or anyone I know collects. But I've come to embrace it as something unique about myself, and realized that life's to short to worry about how others view me. I really love collecting, and it's been one of the few high points in my life through some rough times in the past year.

I feel that I am both ashamed and not ashamed at the same time(Although ashmaed isn't the right word, more like embarressed). I do not go around telling everyone but if a friend asks whats in a 5000 count box beside my couch I may decide to tell them. I just feel that a lot of people think it is for nerds but it is actually a really good way to stay up to date with the new rookies and who the lesser known talent is.

The way I see it everyone does things that will get questioned and collecting cards is just another one of those things. People have their different hobbies and spend their hard earned money on them and it doesn't really matter what they do in their spare time as long as it's under control...

Im almost 33...

Anyway, When I was younger I spent all my money on cards. My dad would get mad. My mom would tell him "I'd rather him spend his money on cards than on drugs!".

I don't care what people think...never have. I have collected cards forever and hopefully always will.

im 25 and i ppl kno i collect cards. i dont care if ppl know. its nothing to be ashamed of.

and they kno if they ever said sumthing to me, they'd b goin home with a broken nose so i guess thats y i never hear it lol

I'm not embarrassed. But I get a lot of crap from everyone I know. Even my mom and dad think I'm nuts. But I feel the only people I can talk to about this are the people on this site and my girlfriend (Who trys to understand why I collect and spend so much money on them) I'm am alittle ashamed just because I spend all my time on here and ebay and not as much as I would like outside doing nothing. That also goes with spending the amount of money I do on cards. But I have gotten a lot better at my spending. So all in all when it comes down to it I'm OK with my hobby and if other people don't get it I usually just show them the number of 1/1 cards I have and if they still don't get it I just tell them off:D

I spend most of my time on ebay and hockey card forums too. But then again I don't like leaving the house. I'm not exactly a "people" person. If it wasn't for all the great people on my hockey card sites, I probably wouldn't talk to anyone, lol.

I pretty much only leave the house if the wife drags me somewhere.

although at the end of the day, you still collect tkachuk :owned:

However, I could have wrote that entire paragraph to describe myself, just with a different time line (same age though). My bro likes it, and actually pulled a crosby yg. My dad might be interested if he had more time. He still has some of his cards from the 70's. What are you going to do?

I'm 21 and most of my friends know I collect hockey cards. Even when they see me using the computer, most of the time they'll see me browsing ebay or HI.

I don't feel ashamed, but I do have to explain to them that in today's world, it isn't just cardboard with pictures of men on them. I got to explain the autographs, the game-used pieces, and how in the 90's everything was over printed. Sometimes if they don't get it I just show them a couple pieces and their jaws drop :D

My father-in-law got me started so my wife doesn't give me too hard a time. It also doesn't hurt that I do the bills....

I'm 25 years old and have been collecting cards and sport memorabilia for years. I have a great job, I own my house, brand new truck in the drive way and a wonderful girlfriend. In no shape or form am I ashamed of collecting. A few of my friends know I collect and frankly they don't care. The only people that I discuss the hobby with is a few local collectors in Calgary and you guys.
Collecting is something I do its not who I am. If I enjoy then who gives a crap what others think. The only time I try to justify my collecting is how much money I spend and like others said how pissed off i get if I lose an auction haha.
I can't think of better times then when I go to card shows or bust some wax. I love the hobby and always will.

finally a topic that needs to be put out! i have the same problem, most of my friends and especially my parents, they dont get it. that i "waste " my money on cards. i love collecting, i love hockey, i try not to spend to much, and make a bit in the process! plus i think of it as an investment, that if say you owna ovechkin fw auto /999 thats graed. when he breaks a bunch of records and is in the hall of fame, its worth ALOT of money, just like old bills, coins, comic books, antiques etc. thats my opinion on it.

I am 35, and I love telling people that I collect cards!! They are amazed and intrigued; many did not even know there were people making cards!!

I have changed my schpeel though; instead of calling myself a hockey card collector, I am now a "buyer and seller of hockey cards, with a small personal collection". !!!!!!

Collecting for collecting is great, but the days of sitting on cards waiting for them to EXPLODE in value will never happen again. Too many cards that never see the light of day, that never got tossed against a wall, that never met a bicycle spoke... Ah the good old days!!

I agree.... people know how to protect their cards now... I don't expect anything to "explode" in value... but of course there will always be rises and dips in the prices of rookie cards like Crosby etc.

Sports card collecting is like any other hobby and there's no reason to be ashamed of it as long as you don't take it overboard. Also, criticizing someone for their hobbies is just immature. Everyone has different hobbies and it should be entirely up to them what they choose to do in their spare time and money..

For me i am defiantely not ashamed of it, but i do get a good ribbing from the guys at work, they just don't uderstand, even when explained to. On that note i have convinced several of them to hit the next show out here(told them i would pay thier entrance fee) otherwise it defiantely wouldn't happen. It most likely won't change their position on it, but it will give them more of a idea

I am soon to be 33 and I am not really ashamed though I am getting bored with it a little. I was doing the upper deck series 1 and 2 and have the sets organized up to 06/07(probably have the 07-08 unorganized...never put the base together though I am sure I have the set) either in boxes or binders(though I never did put together the first set(meh why bother now really)...maybe I should stop with series 1 & 2 and try a smaller set(even if it is something more expensive..in other words something where the base set is around 100 instead of 300(or what ever the base set would be with out young guns.
another problem I have is making sure my trade list is updated...especially if I use beckett and this site...also have way to many base(probably cheaper to toss them...ugh)...sorry if I went off topic a bit
