Don Cherry Vs. Ovechkin.....

I think he's jealous of all the talent on the Capitals.

How can you pick on the BEST PLAYER IN HOCKEY? Simply because your jealous of him.

Anyone notice how he's always the first to greet another player when THEY score a goal? And he's happy for THEM. He's not selfish, this makes a great hockey player.

And I've lost and and all respect I had for Mister Cherry in the past.

He makes it a point to pay respect to all the CANADIAN fallen soldiers, Cops, fireman, injured or tragiedy that happens in hockey at the end of his show. For that reason there is why I love the guy.

Agree 100%. The guy is a complete tool sometimes - but, he loves hockey, he loves his country, he is all about kids doing the right thing, and he publicly shows he is passionate about a lot of subjects no one else will touch with a 10 foot pole. I don't like what he says sometimes, but the good he does do overshadows any of his negatives.

Jealousy has nothing to do with it.

He's a proud Canadian with an old-school mentality. He's been known to ride foreign players throughout the years. It's nothing new and I'd be surprised when he stops doing it.

Ovechkin has been celebrating his goals the same way for 4 seasons, and NOW it becomes tiresome. Gimme a break. And if some player was going to 'cut him in half' like Cherry claims will happen, well they've had 314 games to do so, and I've seen nothing of the such.

I think somebody spiked Don's prune juice, 'cause he seemed ever the more irrational and cranky last Saturday.

Derek

Derek is trash talking?

Now you know it's on!

Honestly, it seems to me to be much adieu about nothing. Cherry is a traditionalist. I don't personally like when people do nutty goal celebrations, or celebrate after fights and such, but it's just a part of sports evolution. It's unnecessary, but it doesn't really hurt anybody...there are bigger and better things the NHL needs to worry about before they curb a bit of excitement.

I don't want to hear any of you folks who are defending Ovie's right to celebrate a goal whining when Sean Avery does the same thing when he returns to the NHL.:D

Cherry Cherry Cherry....... retire already.....

One of the biggest reasons I dislike football is because of the ridiculous celebrations. Like taking out a cellphone and calling someone, pulling a sharpie from your sock and signing the ball, stupid dance moves tha mock the other team, throat slashes...

Hearty celebration is 100% fine, in fact, its awesome, it shows emotion. As long as he doesnt start doing something that requires a choreographer, I love what Ovy does.

Theo Fleury anyone????

I'm old school. I think what OV does is over the top. But the kids seem to like it so it doesn't matter.

What I really liked is what Crosby did it last week mocking him, that was funny.

I am not sure if you are joking with this post or not due to the smiley face but there is 100% truth in this - we have such a double standard in place in all athletics that Ovechkin gets a free pass on this where other athletes wouldn't.

Now - I'm not an Ovechkin fan but I really like his passion and what he does for the game and could really care less if he does cartwheels over the crossbar when he scores but I understand where it would rub some people the wrong way.

It is interesting to me how we react to the different sports stars and what they do - Randy Moss gets busted with weed and he's a thug, gangster, bad rolemodel, etc - same thing happens to Michael Phelps and most of his sponsors back him. Same thing goes with this whole celebration thing - who cares, there are certainly bigger fish to fry in each sport that what happens after a score.

God forbid we have a star player with a modicum of personality. I mean, man alive, hockey players are just about the most boring interviews going. Most of the recent star players, and that includes Crosby whom I otherwise love, just parrot the same robotic crap answers, probably due to not wanting to tarnish their brand.
But still....I'd rather discuss Nietzsche with Lindsay Lohan than listen to 99.9% of NHL players during an interview. But Ovechkin? He's actually marketable. And genuinely so. But of course, this is the NHL we're talking about. They'll never miss an opportunity to blow some positive PR.

Eventually this may come...if for no other reason than to give Cherry more to talk about.

I get what the "old schoolers" have to say...or at least I understand their perspective.

To quote Sid: "I don't like it personally but that's him," Crosby said. "And like it or lump it, that's what he does. Some people like it, some people don't. Personally, I don't like it. But you know what, he's a good player."

I enjoy the personality that AO brings to the game. The fans in DC certainly enjoy it. Back when he scored the crazy goal against Montreal, I remember the fans were going nuts. When he got back to the bench he looked up and saw that he was on the video screen...and cupped his hand to his ear to encourage the fans to be even louder. Some would say that he was over the top with that gesture. But as fans, we see it as an acknowledgement like "yeah, I hear ya - but give me more!". I don't expect it to go over well in every arena or with every fan, but in DC we cannot get enough of it.

I go to many out of town games around the country every year. It was rare a few years ago to visit an arena and see a fan wearing a Caps jersey. I see Ovechkin jerseys in every arena these days - especially the younger crowd. That says to me that at least some fans outside of DC also enjoy what he brings to the game.

You're crazy. No one could ever enjoy this. When a player scores, he should smile for a split second, then skate back to the bench and sit down and prepare for his next shift. I want my players to be more robotic, not beings with personalities.

Sort of like Brett Hull. That guy scored umpteen-hundred goals and barely ever cracked a smile. I like seeing Ovy score but if I was an opposing player it would pi$$ me off to watch it and maybe give me a little more determination to shut him down (not that anyone in the league seems to be able to do it) but maybe he should save the "glass jumping" celebrations for goals that REALLY MATTER. Could you imagine what would happen if he scored the Cup winning goal in triple overtime!! He would probably explode right there on the spot:eek::eek::eek: lol Come to think of it, I would pay a lot of $$ to see that;)

The only problem I would have is if Ovechkin starts deliberately going to the opposing teams bench and celebrating like that, or doing it in the goalies face. Outside of those two things, he's free to do it and I will back him up.

If they NHL starts hyping him you guys will be all over it, which is funny because when the NHL did it/does it with Crosby he gets all the hate, but that's another issue, I just don't want to see the Ovie bandwagon over crowded.

I seem to remember crosby jumping in the air like he won the stanley cup at last years heritage classic or whatever theyre calling it these days, after his shootout goal. Kinda ovechkiness. What I'd love to hear is someone ask cynthia who the best player in the league is. Who cares what he does when he scores, who cares what other people think of what he does. There is one thing thats hard to argue and that is that the guy is the best and most exciting player in the league. Go ahead and hate him....but you'll be watching!!!!!
