I wish that when i got back into the hobby in 05-06 I knew what was on the shelves. Every time I go online and look at boxes from 05-06 all of them have gone up in price, some have gone up in crazy amounts. I wish I bought boxes galore and just held onto them. Every time I tell people this I get either no response or a weird look haha, am I the only one who thinks this? I only know of 1 guy who gets what im saying but he knew it back in 05-06 and he still has his 05-06 cup tins from when they 1st came out unopened.
 
I also got into collecting in 05-06. I really wish I had known what a Crosby Young Gun would've gone for back then. I would've picked a few up. I plan on doing this with some Duschene and Tavares YGs this year.
 
Personally I could never have unopened packs/boxes. I do understand that someones wants to save those, but I couldn't do that.
 
Some products, like The Cup, I can understand a premium for 2005/06 stuff. Even if you don't pull one of the big two rookie patches there are still lots of valuable hits to be had.

What really gets to me is when I hear of a dealer charging $350+ for a hobby box of 2005/06 Upper Deck Series One. The best thing you can pull is what, a Crosby Young Gun? One of those can be had on eBay for half the price of the box now, to me that is a bit much. The dealer I know who has that hobby box has been watching it collect dust for I don't know how long, nobody in their right mind would pay that much for the box and if someone did I would feel sorry for them.

I think 2005/06 products triggered a lot of greed and caused people to try and take advantage of collectors, a trend that I'm seeing a lot more in the hobby now than I did when I casually collected years ago. Serious collectors who have been heavy into the hobby for the last decade or more would know better than I would, but that is my observation.
 
I realized that 05/06 high-end wax would likely be worth more down the road and with that in mind I bought 2 cases of 05/06 Cup and had them sitting at home...they sat...I'd think about them almost every day...they sat some more...I'd dream about them and the 3 color Crosby RC they contained...then finally when I couldn't resist any further, I opened the first one after it had been there a few months and (wow!) it coughed up an Ovechkin RC #/99 (3 colors; yikes!). Life was good. :beer:

That left me with one factory sealed Cup case "for a rainy day" or to sell down the road to recoup the bucks I'd spent on all the other 05/06 Cup cases I'd opened. That one lonely case sat...I'd think about it almost every day...it sat some more...I'd dream about it and the 3 color Crosby RC it contained...then finally (you know it's coming) when I couldn't resist any further, I opened it after it had been there about a month more than the last one I opened and (wow!) it coughed up NEXT TO NOTHING (Yikes!). So I wondered why the *!#%&* did I open it?!? :|

Oh well...
 
I wouldn't hang on to/or bust any old boxes like 05-06 UD, simply for the fact that if you pull a big redemption, it will no longer be honored.
You will get a much better deal buying the old singles that you need, as opposed to paying an inflated price on sealed wax.
 
Yeah I can definatley relate to that. I also got into the hobby in 05/06, and I remember SPA and Ice boxes being 75 a piece, and Crosby YG's at 100 each
 
I wish I could go back to 1990 with the knowledge I have now. I've actually thought about this and here is the first time I would put it in writing...

1990 - 1992: wouldn't touch ANYTHING wax. I'd buy Martin Brodeur RCs at the onset and load up. I'd buy TONS of Sammy Sosa Leaf RCs for pennies on the dollar.

1993 - 1994: Mark McGwire. The man almost hit under .200 and folks thought he was done. His 1985 Topps RC could be had for $2.

1995 - 1997: Still spent loading up on McGwire and Sosa and waiting for 1998 to roll around. Unload Brodeurs for the $10 a piece they're going for.

August 1998: Sell them all! McGwire's are selling for $300 each and Sosa's for $100. Zipitty-do-da!

1999 - Kurt Warner, baby. Load up on his RCs as they come out and on the cheap.

2000 - Buy up all of Drew Bledsoe's backup Tom Brady's RCs. SP, SPx, Playoff, etc. All of them and all day long.

2001 - Albert Pujols Bowman Chrome Autographed RC - $300 per redemption, buy every one that comes available (using the money from the McGwires and Sosas). Redeem the heck out of them.

2002 - Sell Bradys. Sell fast and sell hard!

2003 - present: Buy cases of The Cup and just sit on them. Cheese everyone off because I have so many cases and there are no singles on the market. Release a pack here and there and live off of people's addictions and curiosities.

When someone fixes that blasted flux capacitor, please let me know.

Why are you blaming the dealer? $350CDN is a little high, but I can guarantee you that unsearched, reliable boxes will cost $225-$250CDN wholesale. What's a dealer supposed to when someone asks for a box -- lose money? Charge the exact same thing he pays?

And for the record, I don't stock most 05-06 products for that very reason, and especially 05-06 UD Series I. I explain to people why they're better off simply buying the Crosby RC loose, but some people want the thrill of cracking the wax. Should I tell them to screw off?
 
i'll go as far back as early 1900 then.

there are things to be sold and buy right now too... we all could guess but this all should just be a hobby and only a few of us would be really doing this for a living.
