I doubt these are a secret:
http://www.collectiondrawer.com/

I wanted to order two "sets" of their version of longboxes to start with (10 total), just so they would fit in my closet and look all nice and whatnot. Standard long boxes will not fit in my closet the way I had wanted to because of the depth. Sideways, no problem, but that takes up some unanticipated room and frankly I have a ton of other crap in there already. These are designed specifically to fit in closets (their longboxes are shorter than "real" longboxes). They also have that cool idea of the dividers and leaving space for gaps.

I swallowed hard at the $48.75/each price, but hey, I had some money sitting around gathering dust.

So I go through and get to the shipping part. $55 to ship?

That I won't swallow.

Their website also mentions "cheap" knock-offs--maybe I'll see if I can find some of those!

They are nice but they need to sit on a shelf or somewhere where they can slide. You can't really store them on the floor as they won't work properly. I like the dividers but I will continue to buy the normal storage boxes as long as they are under ten bucks.

Why won't they work properly? I was under the impression the "locks" more or less tie them together so they don't tip. I could see the bottom-most box having to sit on something if you had carpeting or something (which I do), so the drawer would open easier. I also read where some guy on CGC put plywood between "levels" for stability and he had no problem.

Besides the bottom one the rest should be perfect. The bottom one will be fine as long as its not resting on a unstable service (carpet) as you mentioned. The guy who I buy from has them and he found that they work better if they are sitting on a shelf. I guess the extra support helps.

I have 35 or so of them (including 5 of the knockoffs) and these are great. However, as mentioned carpet is terrible with them, the unevenness of the carpet really makes the bottom one "sticky" but the rest work fine.

I bought them before the 'locks' were out, and I find that the top (for my the 6th one) tends to be unstable as gravity does take effect, but I work around that. Eventually, when I get a comitted space for these, I'd roof it off in some fashion to keep that from happening.

The shipping is a pain in the ***, being in Canada, I really wanted these, and I asked for a shipment of 30 to Canada, and the [fill in the blank] owner wouldn't even give me a quote as it was too much work for him. I knew the price would be up there, but I was serious about wanting them.

Luckily, a store in Calgary carries them, and was going to Simon Fraser University for an event, so when they brought the stuff to SFU, they were able to bring in 25 for me. As well, I had a friend go thru Seattle and pick some up for me.

I hated supporting the guy, but these are designed quite nicely and really make filing my comics much easier. Needless to say, when I saw the knockoffs, I had no qualms about picking up what I needed.

Who sells the knock-offs? If they are up to par I'm ok with buying them, though I would prefer to have the dividers for convenience.

The site lists a comic shop about 20-minutes away that carries them. I have 3 local shops closer, but I happened to be by the other one over the weekend. I stopped in and the guy kinda chuckled and said "They're great, but we had a hard time selling them, and the company stopped sending them to us after we called a couple of times about restocking."

Joe,

A local store had carried the knock offs, but they aren't able to get them any longer. I'm not surprised the local store had problems restocking them, as I mentioned the owner/staff are not that pleasent.
