I am looking at buying a Ken Dryden rookie from 71-72 (unslabbed, I want to frame it), the question is, is there a big difference in Topps vs O-Pee-Chee in regards to price and desirability? I'm not a huge vintage collector but I do like to pick up rookies of players from my childhood and I have always bought o-pee-chee but is topps a viable alternative? If you search Dryden's rookie on ebay some of the most expensive cards are Topps?

I look forward to what you guys have to say, thanks in advance.

Topps are definitely more plentiful and affordable. The OPC version will run you about three times the value of a Topps in the same condition. Obviously, the OPC is more desirable.

Hi,

For all cards from 1968-1989, the OPC version is more desirable and almost always more expensive.

If you are going to frame it, you might as well get the Topps because the fronts are identical and it will be cheaper in the same condition.

Hope that helps!

Awesome thanks guys, for the frame I think I will go with the Topps. I am doing a framing of the 4 winningest goaltenders in Habs history, Price, Roy, Dryden and Plante. Something I've been wanting to do for a while.

1968-1988, actually. For the 89-90 set, Topps is the "better" card. Reason for this is that in that year OPC let the presses run more than ever to fill the myriad of vending cases they released later in the run. Just look at the PSA pops to see how much rarer they are.

Here's a couple examples

Sakic OPC PSA graded = 3151
Sakic Topps PSA graded = 1137

Sakic OPC PSA 10's = 227
Sakic Topps PSA 10's = 16

Leetch OPC Graded = 937
Leetch Topps graded = 434

Leetch OPC PSA 10's = 110
Leetch Topps PSA 10's = 89

In any event, and back on topic, I agree that if you are framing it, the Topps card will look great.

Yeah, I was going to say 89 is an exception...
