The Anaheim Ducks officially suspended Scott Niedermayer on Tuesday, a formality that was expected on the first day of camp with the star defenceman a no-show.

"Yes, he was suspended today," Ducks GM Brian Burke said during an NHL media conference call. "I spoke with Scott to tell him he was being suspended, which Scotty expected."

The move clears up US$6.75-million that won't count against Anaheim's salary cap. As they are right up against the cap at $49 million..
 
This is just a move to have the cap space available up until he comes back. Instead of his whole contract counting against the cap, they'll only have to count whatever the pro-rated amount is when he returns
 
Don't understand what the whole deal is with Scott Niedermayer. You either retire or you don't.
Do you really want to be the hockey player who after winning the cup is remembered for retiring after being suspended for not showing up for the 1st day of training camp.

Honestly, I don't think that's what people will remember when they think of him. I've seen it happen a few times before; can't remember any names in particular at the moment, but I do recall hearing about it. I can understand where he is coming from, though. He's not sure whether or not it's his time to retire and he wants to make sure he makes the correct decision.
 
Meh - he just didn't want to have to show up to camp early and go through the hassle of the games overseas.

I'm guessing he'll be back around February.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't return. He's got a huge contract under his belt and he's far from pushing any age boundaries. At the end of the playoffs, I think it was just sorting through his thoughts that was required.

What's surprising is that he's not getting his act together and has had plenty of time to make a decision. My guess is that his decision has been made, he will return, may wish to start camp late, and is using the decision making as a guise to fend off any criticism for not starting camp on time.
 
Seems to me he did make a decision. After playing into June he is not ready to go thru training camp and the generally meaningless first part of the season. So he'll play some more golf and stay in shape and be ready to begin playing in January or February or when one of the Ducks "D" men goes down due to injury. Nice "backup" to have waiting in the wings!:cool:
