eBay auction

I won an auction and I requested a total. Got an e-mail today from Paypal requesting funds for an item with the same ID# as the auction. I asked the guy to bill me through eBay and he said he has his own checkout system but can send a message through ebay to confirm that he is the seller of the item.

Is this normal? Will I still be protected? I'm thinking no, but I just want to make sure.

I've dealt with plenty of sellers who go through Auctiva. If it's anything else, I'm not sure what to tell you.

the checkout system doesn't matter when you're paying with paypal. its the seller that has to worry if he's covered. if he doesn't get signature confirmation when delivering a package, anyone can file a chargeback on him. as the buyer, if the seller tries to rip you off, you file the chargeback and paypal waits for him to show proof of delivery.

At least for the time being, you should still be able to use their third party checkout function directly through eBay. You should end up redirected through to the checkout when trying to pay through eBay.

Third party checkouts are still supported by eBay, but they are phasing out their capability. Their goal is mid-2009. I'm phasing out my Auctiva support, but keeping them as an insurance provider so I can offer inexpensive insurance to international customers.

It doesn't take me to ebay though. It just goes directly to paypal. It's literally just like as if someone sent me a request for paypal from any random person. I checked the paypal and they are a Non-U.S. Unverified Premier Member. If I pay this person directly through paypal and then mark as payment sent, will eBay still protect me?
