ebay changes - masking bidders

So what are peoples opinions on the new ebay changes that mask bidders for most auctions?

Ive seen arguments that this will cause more shilling, but I'm in doubt on that one.. I see this as a benefit for sellers - a significant one..

For me personally, if I see some folks I know bidding on something, then I usually won't bid as it only drives up their cost...

Now unless Ive memorized their feedback (highly doubtful!), I really don't know who is bidding, and will probably be going for it more often..

What do others think??
 
I like this as i have a few jerks that bid my cards up when they see me bidding on Roenicks cause they know i am a collector of his.Now they cant see im bidding.Hopefully it will save me a few bucks.
 
I'm not a big fan of the new system.....I wanted to get a hold of a seller once who was buying a card that was a fake patch card and I couldn't warn him about it. Kinda felt bad as he ended up with it and now is out a few bucks for it but I guess what can you do!! I don't understand why people bid so high and let these people shill the cards they are interested in when they set their max bid on the 2nd day of the auction? Either set your snipe max or bid on it in the last minute and if you can't ask someone who will.
I don't like giving sellers who shill the chance to burn me!!
 
last minute bidding is the way to go. it is the only way to remove the "think" factor..

that is.. after seeing someone out bid my $5 bid on a $30 card... Hey, that card is really worth $30. I think I should bid $25... and many times I do.. While If I wait til the last minute, and throw my $5 bid out there, there isnt a whole lot of time to be re-thinking.. time has run out, and it is done!
 
It's not been their biggest catastrophe. That's still to come.

I think it was more to prevent poaching of sales than anything else. In that regard, it succeeds.
 
Hmmm:

+ helps avoid people targeting specific bidders to jack up the price
*+ helps sellers avoid collusion among bidders

- can't warn about fake patches
- shilling is difficult to determine
*- you might bid up a friend's bid without intention

* the asterisked points are based on perception

Regardless, 2 yays to 3 nays, the change sucks.

Shillers and shady sellers have been waiting for this one for a while and they got it!

its ridiculous! like said prevoiuosly if I know the person I am bidding against then chances are I will stop bidding. I also don't like the fact that you aren't able to advise potential buyers of fradulent autos / patches.
 
Wes - You're missing another big "yay" there. Bidder poaching has been a major issue for quite a while. Consider something like the Run for the Cup inserts. There hasn't been a Crosby up for a week, and the next one up goes way high - like $200 or something. The changes prevent Joe Guy from approaching the second bidder with another copy of the card to capitalize on someone ELSE'S sale.

Ebay will claim that's to keep the integrity of the sale to the highest level. There's a kernel of truth to that. It's also to ensure that all sales enabled by eBay generate CASH for eBay.

That's horsehockey...what eBay fails to realize is that if they alienate the regulars by constantly screwing over the sellers, and in turn scaring the bidders by eliminating the major tools used to prevent fraud, they're only taking money out of their own pockets because they're going to drive people away in droves...giving shillers a method to hide their actions is not "keeping the integrity of the sale to the highest level". And while bid poaching may be an issue, it's a whole lot less prevalent than shilling. I've been on eBay for over 7 years and done well over a thousand transactions. I have never, not once, been approached by somebody offering to sell offline as a non-winning bidder.
