so I diligently save pictures of canes cards.. patches, jerseys lower numbers.. I must have thousands.. Well guess what. ebay changed the way they encode pages, and now I can no longer do a right click then save the image...

I am using firefox 3.5..

Anyone else try this? it now seems to have spread across all live auctions. the only pictures you can still save are the tiny tiny pictures from the list view..

They've been doing this for a few weeks now, but not across the board. My guess is they are rolling it out in groups of categories or something.

They are wrapping the images in Flash so you can no longer right-click and save image. Now to get the full size you have to:
1) Click the "enlarge" link which opens it in a new window
2) View the source of the page
3) Do a Cntl-F for ".jpg" and grab the url of the jpg image itself (it's the first one found with Find)

It really stinks...

well, I guess my time in the hobby is running short. One of my favorite things to do was to get pictures of shortprinted canes cards and look at all of the patches, autos, etc.. I have tons of photos of 05-06, 06-07 and 07-08 the cup canes cards. Complete sets for some low prints from 07-08 the cup..

And it sure beat having to take the time to scan cards myself when I bought them off ebay...

They seriously just ripped a big part of the fun away from me...

for fraudsters.. it really isnt that bad. If you are really going down that path, they will do anything. Alt-PrtScr of the enlarged image with a paste into your favorite photo editor does just fine...

For someone like me grabbing mass amounts of pictures as they appear, it just doubles (if not more) the amount of time it takes to snag a record of great cards I can't afford to own... :mad:

sad day for me..

I dont think we will see any great archives of patches going forward, unless someone has loads of time on their hands..

Old process...

open auction
Right click image
Click "save image as"
navigate to directory
type in name
save
done


new process (assuming paint is open)

open auction
click enlarge
do alt-prtscr
navigate to paint
shift insert to paste
file, save-as
navigate to directory
type in name
save
done


Now before the image was just what was uploaded, now it includes the browser border. So I have to go through an extra crop down the road step...

Just a lot more steps for really nothing.. doesnt really protect anyone.. oh well..
 
If you have a Mac you can hold: SHIFT+CRTL+COMMAND+4

This is essentially the same as print screen, only it brings up a special cursor and you drag the area you want to save and there is no need to go in a program and crop the rest out. It even automatically saves it for you.

Where does it save it to? I get the cursor, drag it, and then it disappears and I can't find where the file goes.
 
If I may make a humble suggestion?

I've seen that sometimes eBay will wrap their pictures in flash and... sometimes I don't (I don't know why). Have you tried the following?
  • Search while signed out?
  • Another eBay international portal? (like www.ebay.ca or www.ebay.de) - Sometimes they roll out changes later for international websites - just search by item number, you'll find it.
  • Use a third party java script disabling program - like 'http://noscript.net/' to stop all Java script on a website (which also helps stop malware installations) - Perhaps eBay has a backup format that you can still work with if you install the stop script firefox add-on
  • Use a third part downloading program like Download Helper 4.5 'http://www.downloadhelper.net/' which can help you download any embedded media in a web page (like youtube videos, etc.)?
  • Search the mozilla website for a firefox add-on. You'd be surprised what's been developed out there, even for eBay related stuff

I can't find an embedded image at the moment to test the Noscript add on or the download helper add-on, but maybe you can get them to work.

BTw, to all those people who suggested print screen and paste into paint... Well, yes, that works, but if you have to do more than 5, you'll see how tiresome it is to fix every image so that you don't have the entire window saved and taking away from the card's image by itself.

ok.. you all have inspired me to find a new way.. and I have windows vista.. so the new way with similar steps is to use "snipping tool". Which actually seems to be better than the old save image, as I now can just carve out what I want on a bad picture...

basically leave the thing running, it sits on top, and you click new, drag a box over the area you want and it appears in the snip tool, and you save...

you don't need to hit alt+prtscrn, just the print screen button will do the job ;)

I just doubled productivity, you can thank me later :D
 
I also like to collect scans of my favorite Iginla cards and subsets. I hadn't run into this problem yet but I'm glad the fix is in this thread for when I need it.
