Ebay problem, can anyone help.

Hey all,
I listed 10 mid end cards on ebay yesterday and i have a buyer with only 16 feedback bidding on 6 of them. He has already placed 18 bids and i'm concerned that other buyer's will think that these are shill bids causing them to go lower then the average sell price. He keeps bidding in small increments until he is the high bidder, and his 16 feedback are actually pokemon cards. Should i cancel his bids or just let it play out?

Have you checked his bidding patterns? Is he only bidding on your stuff? If so, I would send him a message asking why the sudden interest in your auctions. If he does not respond or if his response doesn't make him sound legit, I would cancel his bids. My 2 cents

His issue is that this guy is bidding in small increments until he becomes high bidder. This makes it look like shill bidding, which will deter others from placing legitimate bids in fear of being shilled
 
Some people use this as a strategy to deter others from bidding and thus win the card for a lower amount. Check into it.
 
I had someone do this to an auction of mine. He ran up the bid until he won it, then cancelled his last bid. Not sure why except he wanted to know what they other guy would pay for it. He ma yhave had a similar card and wanted to establish a higher selling price so he could say "well, one sold for xxx"
 
I just don't understand people's logic. If I want a card I win it. I could care less about any shill bidding. Ya it sucks but it happens and if this guys is bidding in small increments I'm willing to bet he isn't going to win the auctions. If you are worried about what you get for it then list it at a BIN.
 
Altho' I've never done this, perhaps one suggestion would be to contact ebay and let them know your concerns and then let them decide how to deal with it. This way, even if ebay does nothing, you've voiced your concerns before the auctions end and if ever challenged, ebay could point that out to any disgruntled potential bidders.
 
i agree that the best advice is to determine whether he's currently bidding on other items and if there are similarities to your cards. If he is, then you have to believe his interest is genuine. It doesn't sound like he's doing anything wrong.

If you're gonna buy it why not put in one ridiculously high bid? Instead, your bidding hard by increasing your bid the minimum every time? And this pysches other buyers out because.....?

I'm thinking I might have to cancel his bids.:(

This is actually a pretty good way to win items. Once in a drunken state I bid 30 times on a card with every bid over my top bid only going up a few cents. I actually won the card for about 1/3 of what it normally sold for. I guess it could cost you in the long run but again if you are setting it up for auction then you have to willing to accept what you get

Yea, but a couple of things about this one don't add up. 1) He's not even the high bidder, in fact he's only been the high bidder for a grand total of 40 minutes the entire auction. 2) He hasn't placed a bid in two days; 30 bids in the first 24 hours of the auction and then nothing for two days?

The card is already near the price I thought it would sell at so I'm not concerned about losing money, just about what it might do to my reputation.
 
And now for random message from Mr. 30bids that I hate to read :dead::

"Ive spent about 5,000 on this perticular set and have lots of cards in multiples, most of the HUGE cards I have in doubles.
I still bid on most of the big cards here that I have to keep the value of mine high, like for instance wheh I see a Backstrom/Ovechkin/Green or a Crosby/Malkin/Stall which I have several, I bid on it early and a near value of what it will sell for cause I know if I keep doing this, illl drive the value up and it works, these two cards go up in value every time ones sold here."

I wouldn't worry about your reputation on ebay all that much. As long as your feedback is good and people know you then no worries. Honestly if someone wants a card they will buy it without care for some "possible but unproven" shill bidding. Hell I have even won cards from people that I know 100% shill. I wanted the card so I won it.

I have done well over 8000 transactions on Ebay since bout 1998. I honestly couldn't care less what an item sells for it I list it at a regular auction. If I did care, then I would either list it with a reserve or BIN/OBO feature. And in all honesty, I really dont care what a persons bidding pattern looks like. All that matters is that he/she can pay for the auction when its over. Also by looking at his feedback, he's a fairly new Ebay'er. So he might be new to all this whole online auction thing.

I actually had a situation like this last year. I had a buyer with 55 feedback bid/win on over 36 of your auctions totaling over $1900.00 USD. It never came to my attention until I decided to do some research. I found out that he hasn't been active in some time, and all of a sudden he went on a bidding frenzy. So I contacted him, and asked if he could send payment for what hes already won. Within hours, the payment was made. To make a long story short, he ended up spending close to $5300.00 USD with us in a matter of about 8 weeks. I guess his local store closed down, so he needed another resource to buy his gaming cards from. So he decided to try the Ebay route.

That's shill bidding. It doesn't matter what his reasons. Attempting to drive up the value of a card by bidding without intent to purchase is against EBAY rules and is unethical. I'd peport him and use the quotation.

The question is, if he does happen to bid up a card, and then win it. Is is shill bidding if he completes the transaction? I dont see anywhere in that quote him saying that he wont pay or complete the transaction?

Read Hederman's previous posts. He's not the high bidder and rarely has been.
